For the second time in as many days, Fabio Scozzoli broke the Italian national record in the 50 breast.
In the semi-finals he clocked a time of 26.96, squeaking into the final in 8th, and also edging the national record by one one-hundredth, previously held by Nicolo Martinenghi. Martinenghi’s 26.97 still stands as the Junior world record.
Scozzoli was five one-hundredths better in the final, hitting a time of 26.91 to place 6th in an absolutely loaded field. Adam Peaty went under 26 seconds once again for gold in 25.99, and Felipe Lima (26.52) and Cameron van der Burgh (26.60) grabbed the silver and bronze.
This is a great comeback swim for the 28-year-old after missing the 100 breast semi-finals in 18th place.
Prior to the competition, Scozzoli’s best time was 27.17 from all the way back at the 2011 Championships when he won the silver medal. He also won the 100m silver that year in Shanghai.
