FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams started the dual meet part of their season with a victory over Monmouth University on Saturday afternoon. The women’s team posted a 221-73 victory over the Hawks while the men registered a 207-81 win against Monmouth.
The Stags dominated throughout the meet with the Fairfield women winning 11 individual events and taking the top two places in seven of those races. The men were equally effective taking 10 individual first places, including five events with the top two slots.
Both teams won their respective relay events with the women taking the 400 medley relay in 4:25.85 and the 200 free relay in 1:49.41. The men secured the top spot in the 400 medley relay with a time of 5:50.49 and the 200 free relay in 1:35.21.
The men’s team captured their share of 1st and 2nd place finishes during its portion of the meet, beginning with a sweep in the 800 free by Joseph Stewart (8:29.09) and Joey Nizzardo (8:31.72). Tim Regan recorded the top time in the 200 free (1:55.21) while Oliver McLaughlin secured a second-place run in the 100 back (58.88).
Fairfield took the top two places in the next two events as Chris Ford (1:04.37) and Jeffrey Vlass (1:06.92) represented the Stags in the 100 breast and Ed Hunt (2:06.25) and Joseph Stewart (2:07.87) has success in the 200 fly. Alex Belfer registered the best time in the 50 free (23.38) and in the 100 free (52.75).
McLaughlin had the best Fairfield time in the 200 back, placing third with his time of 2:10.87. Fairfield swept the 200 breast courtesy of Ford (2:24.80) and Vlass (2:25.35) and the 400 free through the efforts of Stewart (4:06.19) and Regan (4:11.70). Fairfield closed out the meet with first place swims in the 100 fly by Hans Lim (57.96) and the 200 IM by Hunt (2:07.89).
Fairfield divers also took to the pool with Alexis Gaulin (185.85), Lia Oppenheim (163.65), and Elizabeth Beailieu (118.95) sweeping the 1 meter. Gaulin (207.75), Oppenheim (182.70), and Beaulieu (163.05) took the same finishes in the 3 meter.
On the women’s side, Lily Barker and Erin Hoyland started things off with first and second place swims in the 800 free, finishing in 9:30.14 and 9:37.01 respectively. Sydney Scalise and Laina Bayles continued the trend by first one-two in the 200 free with their times of 2:12.49 and 2:14.70. Erini Pappas won the first of her three events in the 100 back, touching the wall in 1:04.32.
Fairfield also took first and second in the 100 breast as Cailey Stockwell (1:15.76) and Alison Sposili (1:16.34) represented the Stags. Maggie O’Donnell was the Stags top finisher in the 200 fly, garnering third place based on her finish of 2:28.99. Olivia Thompson won the 50 free by taking the distance in 27.20.
Pappas started the next run of events with the top time in the 200 back (2:19.30) while Stockwell (2:42.12) and Sposili (2:43.41) competed in the 200 breast. The top spots in the 400 free went to Scalise (4:37.55) and Barker (4:37.89). Maggie O’Donnell secured the top time in the 100 fly (1:06.91) followed by Pappas (2:23.09) and Sposili (2:29.04) closing out the individual events with first and second in the 200 IM.
The men’s team saw Sam Tonole (160.20) and Noah Duncan (144.75) taking first and second in the 1 meter dive while Tonole scored 149.85 points and Duncan netted 141.90 points in the 3 meter dive.
Fairfield will compete in a pair of dual meets next weekend when the teams take to the road for the first against Providence College on Friday, October 28 before hosting the College of the Holy Cross on Saturday, October 29.

FAIRFIELD, CT – The Monmouth University men’s and women’s swimming teams opened their 2022-23 seasons against Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick RecPlex Pool.
The men’s team dropped their matchup with the Stags, 207-81, while the women’s team fell, 221-73.
Callan Smith won the 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke and Jensen Ritter took the top spot in the 200m butterfly for the Hawks.
The competition took place in a meter pool, which is longer than the 25-yard pool Monmouth’s teams traditionally compete in.

– Callan Smith won two individual events, the 100m back in 57.74 and 200m back in 2:04.49. Smith’s victories were his first of the season and he now has 75 individual career wins to his credit.
– Jensen Ritter placed first in the 200m butterfly, winning in 2:27.31. Ritter won her first race of the season and sixth of her career.
