WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — The Fairfield University swimming and diving teams opened the dual meet portion of their 2023-24 schedule with a sweep of Monmouth University, a meet which also represented the first road trip of the season. The men’s team edged the Hawks by a 135-127 margin while the women’s team came away with a 174-88 decision.
Both teams opened the meet by taking the top spot in the 400 medley relay with the women’s team posting a time of 3:57.31 while the men’s garnered a time of 3:30.67. Erini Pappas, Serafinal Viola, Maggie O’Donnell, and Nora Segurola-Larrinaga comprised the women’s relay with Oliver McLaughlin, Hans Lim, Jay Parente, and Alex Belfer made up the men’s relay.
The Stags had a pair of student-athletes reach the top three in the 1000 free including Erin Hoyland’s second-place swim (10:46.34) and Joey Nizzardo’s third-place finish (10:05.53). A pair of swimmers touched the wall first in the 200 free, namely Sydney Scalise (1:59.19) for the women and Joseph Stewart (1:43.82) for the men. Olivia Thompson also contributed with her third-place run in 2:02.39. Segurolla-Larrinaga continued the winning trend with her performance in the 100 back securing the top time with 58.21 while Pappas was a close second in 58.23. McLaughlin was the men’s team top finisher with his third-place swim in 52.91.
The 1000 breaststroke was next up in the meet and the women responded with a sweep of the top three positions. Tone Sandsjoe (1:05.01), Cailey Stockwell (1:09.58), and Caroline Krawec (1:10.49) represented the Stags in the event. On the men’s side, Hans Lim also touched the wall first after posting a time of 58.74. Ed Hunt paced the Stags in the 200 butterfly with his first-place position (1:55.23). Olivia Glaser took second place after completing the distance in 2:12.41.
In the 50 free, Olivia Thompson won the event in 24.78 followed by Serafina Viola in 25.32. Alex Belfer covered the same event in 21.56 which was good enough to tie him for second place in the event. Segurola-Larrinaga earned her second win of the day when she beat all 100 free participants with her time of 53.73, just ahead of Sydney Scalise’s runner-up finish in 55.19. Stewart also collected his second win of the day in the same event, taking the distance in 47.12.
Pappas garnered another top finish with her performance in the 200 back, completing the event in 2:06.92, ,while Viola collected third place after timing in 2:13.66. Adam Schrapf represented Fairfield in the 200 back as well, registering a time of 1:56.29 for second place. The 200 breaststroke saw Fairfield win on both sides including Sandsjoe (2:25.53) and Lim (2:10.89). Stockwell and Hunt were second in the event, clocking in at 2:30.85 and 2:13.56, respectively.
Fairfield also swept the 500 free with Olivia Glaser posting a winning time of 5:18.18 and Tim Regan registering a mark of 4:47.13. The same result came in the 200 IM as Pappas secured another win in 2:11.73 as did Hunt with his time of 1:55.80. The meet came to its conclusion with Fairfield wins in the 200 free relay. Segurola-Larrinaga, Thompson, Viola, and Scalise comprised the women’s relay and Patrick Gill, McLaughlin, Regan, and Belfer combined for the men’s relay.
The Stags cap the weekend road trip on Saturday when they head to Rider University for a 1 pm start.

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University men’s and women’s swimming teams opened their 2023-24 seasons against Fairfield on Friday afternoon at Steadman Natatorium.
The men’s team suffered a close loss to the Stags, 135-127, while the women’s team dropped a 174-88 decision.
Blake Reynolds and Jensen Ritter earned two victories each on the day to lead Monmouth’s efforts.

Ten men and four women made their Monmouth debuts in the meet as Evan Belmont, Massimo Catania, Ziv Cohen, Andrew Denman-Grimm, Torin Doherty, Nevo Ein-Dor Truong, Jack Hawley, Trevor Nolan, Kacper Sobieszuk, Helena Colletta, Kristen Gullickson, Riley Reteneller and Erin Ware competed for the first time.
Helena Colletta and Ziv Cohen both earned their first career victories in the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 10:46.20 and 9:43.85 respectively.
Owen Dyson earned a first-place victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.10. It was Dyson’s second career win.
Jensen Ritter had two first-place finishes on the day; in the 200-yard butterfly she finished in 2:07.46 and in the 100-yard butterfly touched the wall in 58.24. Ritter now has 12 career victories.
Blake Reynolds also had a pair of victories in the 50 free (21.14) and the 100-yard butterfly (51.32). With these wins, Reynolds holds 34 total wins in his career.
Dylan Edge finished first in the 200-yard backstroke to earn his 18th career victory, clocking in at 1:55.86.

The Hawks resume competition next Saturday, October 21 when they host Fordham at 12 p.m.
