Remy Fairweather and Daniel Tranter were the top qualifiers in what was the final session of preliminaries of the 2014 Australian National Championships.
Fairweather was the top qualifier in the women’s 400 freestyle recording a time of 4:09.17. She was followed by Jessica Ashwood who posted a 4:09.58 and Bronte Barratt who qualified in a time of 4:10.28. All three women currently rank in the world’s top ten in the event.
Ashwood is second with a 4:05.01, Barratt is seventh with a 4:07.44 and Fairweather is ninth with a 4:07.79.
Tranter put up the fastest time in the men’s 200 IM qualifying in a time of 2:00.27. He was followed by Thomas Fraser-Holmes who posted a 2:01.04 and Justin James who recorded a 2:01.26.
Tranter’s season’s best of 1:59.06 is the third ranked time in the world.

Magnussen swam 21.77 to Matt Abood’s 21.88 in the swim-off, so this means Matt Abood will not be selected for the 50 free.
Ah good. Fairweather just swam 4:06.02. It is nothing of course compared to Ledecky’s, and will not even medal at the commonwealh games (she’ll be lucky if she final at the CWG). But at least she keeps on improving, more than a second faster than the time she swam to win worlds junior last year.
McEvoy continued to lead march of the fine tradition of “who is the next PVDH?” by swimming 21.97. He is now faster than PVDH ever was in the 50 and 100, but is still lagging behind in 200 free, 1:45.46 to PVDH’s 1:44.89.
Another PB by Horton in 14:51.55, I’m a iitlle disappointed because I thought he could go under 14:50 here.
ah so Fairweather is swimming in the trials.
Fairweather is in the same age as Ledecky, and when they were both 14, their 400 and 800 times were similar, and in fact I think Fairweather’s 400 was a little bit faster (Fairweather went 4:08 and 8:29 at the age of 14).
And I made the prediction (that didnt eventuate) that Fairweather and Ledecky wiould battle it out in the senior water in the next years. My prediction didnt pan out as Ledecky went supernova the next two years while Fairwerather got stuck and hit the plateau.
