Fantine Lesaffre has broken the French Record in the women’s 400 IM in short course meters on Saturday at the European Derby. Representing the Energy Standard club, Lesaffre swam a 4:26.41 that placed 2nd behind winner Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who swam 4:25.24.

The old French Record of 4:27.31 was shared between Lesaffre herself, from the 2018 World Championships, and Lara Grangeon, who did that same time at the 2015 European Short Course Championships. Grangeon was originally committed to compete for the New York Breakers this season, but withdrew to focus on open water training after qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in the 10km marathon swim.

Lesaffre’s swim ranks her now 14th in history, knocking Olympic champion Kirsty Coventry down the list. The World Record of 4:18.94 was done by Mireia Belmonte in 2017.

Lesaffre, the defending European Champion in long course in the 400 IM in long course, was sub-peak at the World Championships – she was just 13th in the 200 IM semi-finals, missing the final, and placed 8th in the 400 IM final. After missing the first meet of the season for Energy Standard, however, she’s grown into the short course season, and is on pace to be a big contributor for her team this week.
