The 2019 African Games continued from Morrocco tonight, with several more meet records biting the dust on day 3. In the men’s events, Mohamed Samy of Egypt topped the 50m backstroke field in a new Games Record time of 25.26, edging out Algeria’s Abdellah Ardjoune‘s time of 25.61.

Samy owns the Egyptian National Record in this event with the 24.95 mark put up at this year’s World Championships in Gwangju. His teammate Ahmed Mahmoud took bronze tonight in 26.12.

South Africa’s Alaric Basson doubled up on his 100m breast victory from last night with another podium-topping effort tonight. Basson wrangled up the 200m breast victory in a time of 2:14.21, registering a new African Games Record in the process.

Additional winners for the men included Mohammed Mehdi Aghili of Tunisia taking the men’s 400m free in 3:48.94, while South Africa’s Ryan Coetzee got it done in the 100m fly for gold in a time of 53.70.

Egypt’s Farida Osman made her presence known once again in the women’s events, this time taking on the 10om fly event. After taking the 50m fly last night, Osman carried through to a time of 58.79 to set a new Games Record in this 100m final.

As in the 50m fly, South Africa’s Erin Gallagher touched just behind Osman, producing a 100m fly silver mark of 59.34. Rounding out the top 3 was Felicity Passon of Seychelles, who notched a new National Record of 1:00.61 en route to bronze.

Passon also clinched the 50m back silver earlier in the session behind Gallagher. Gallagher touched in 29.05, with Passon right behind in 29.17. Passon’s time also overtakes one of her own old national records, beating her previous lifetime best of 29.30 from 2 years ago.
