FAIRFAX, Va. – Florida Atlantic University swimming and diving commenced day one of three at the Patriot Invitational held at Jim McKay Natatorium. After one day of competition, the women are in first place with 274 points after racking up two first-place finishes, one second place and two third-place showings. On the men’s side, the team is in fourth (221 points) and have totaled two first-place, one second-place and three third-place finishes. The 400 medley relay team of Braedan Leach, Carter Januzelli, Rateb Hussein and Connor Smoak broke a six-year school record in the event with a time of 4:17.65 to cap off a great night of swimming.

Women

• Spence Atkins got individual events started with a first-place showing in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.69. Kirsten Hobson followed her in third, capturing a new lifetime best time of 4:58.72
• Hailee Trotter took seventh in the 200 IM (2:06.28)
• In the 50 free, Abby Marshall touched the wall fourth (23.48), Fatimah Westbrook captured sixth (25.53) and Mackenzie Brown tallied seventh (23.54)
• The women’s 400 medley relay team of Marshall, Atkins, Westbrook and Brown swam to a third place title (3:46.70)
• On the boards, Alicia Mora (301.2) and Malvina Catalano (261.85) finished first and second, respectively on the 3-meter

Men

• The distance swimmers continue to close the show, as the men swept in the 500 free. Josh Fountain captured first (4:28.90), Will Smith took second (4:30.73) and Clay Riemenschneider tallied third with a new personal record (4:31.17). Jack Shapiro took sixth (4:34.95)
• Rateb Hussein captured third place in the 50 free (20.49)
• In the 1-meter, Logan Downey captured first with a score of 343.40
• The men capped off the night on a high note with a school record-breaking third place finish in the 400 medley relay, once again by the team of Leach, Januzelli, Hussein and Smoak

“Our divers started the meet strong with some great divers, especially with four of our ladies in the top eight,” said head coach Lara Preacco. “Our swimmers followed suit with some faster swims in the afternoon from both our men and women. The Owls will hit the pool once again for day two of competition tomorrow. FAIRFAX, Va. – UNCW junior sprinter Evan Arsenault won the women’s 50 Freestyle and set a meet record in the process to lead the Seahawks on Thursday at the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason at the McKay Natatorium.

UNCW holds an 11-point lead on Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel entering the second day while the Seahawk women trail front-runner FAU and second-place Drexel.

Arsenault, who also swam a leg on UNCW’s winning 200 Free Relay that opened the meet, touched the wall in a time of 22.51 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 22.70 set in 2016.

The Seahawks dominated the 50 Free by placing three in the top five of the finals race Thursday evening. Joining Arsenault were Faith Pilcher and Sarah Olson who finished third and fifth, respectively.

All three also swam on the winning 200 Free Relay along with Hannah Copeland. The relay posted a winning time of 1:33.44.

UNCW gained valuable points in the diving portion of Thursday’s schedule. Courtney Klausen and Nicole Costello finished third and fourth respectively, in the women’s 3-meter board. On the men’s side, Kolbein Bjugan took second in the men’s 1-meter dive.

In the men’s meet, despite not winning a race, the Seahawks were able to record a pair of second-place finishes in the relays, a second-place showing in the 50 Free and a third-place finish in the 200 IM.

In the 200 Free Relay, the relay of Will Countie, Jack Cosgrove, Gianmichael D’Alessandro and Sean Cannon clocked in at 1:21.36.

In closing out the day’s races, Countie, Josh Rigsbee, Noah Cahan and Cannon combined for a time of 3:16.88 in the 400 Medley Relay. The Seahawks moved into first when the relay of Brent Hoshall, D’Alesandro, Henderson Louviere and Cosgrove finished fourth.

Cannon finished second in the 50 Free with a time of 20.30 and Henderson took third in the 200 IM with a mark of 1:50.47.

Day two of the meet begins at 10 a.m. on Friday with the prelims followed by Diving at 1 p.m. and the swimming finals at 6 p.m.

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Drexel men’s swimming and diving team broke three meet records on the first day of the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason. The Dragons set new standards in the 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and 200 IM.

Jason Arthur factored in all three record-setting performances on Thursday. As the third leg of the 200 free relay, he helped Stathis Malamas, John Scully and Kiran Richardson turn in a time of one minute, 21.11 seconds – the program’s third-best time in the relay. Arthur led off for the 400 medley relay team of Zachary Valenzuela, Paris Raptis and Malamas as the four combined to clock in at 3:15.90.

The Teaneck, N.J. native also set an individual meet record in the 200 IM as the Dragons claimed gold and silver in the event. Arthur touched the wall at 1:47.60 to better his own meet record. Raptis finished in second at 1:49.82, the second-best time in Drexel history.

In total, Drexel earned 11 top-10 results on Thursday with three golds and one silver medal.

The Dragons placed three in the 50 free. Richardson finished in a tie for fourth with Malamas and Scully in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Drexel received two top-10 finishes in the 1 meter. Anthony Musciano placed fifth, and Will Seely collected an eighth-place result.

Through 12 events, the Dragons sit comfortably in second place behind fellow Colonial Athletic Association member UNCW. The Seahawks top the eight-team field with 256.5 points. Drexel earned 245.5 points on Thursday.

The second day of the Patriot Invitational begins tomorrow at 10 a.m.

FAIRFAX, Va. – Lera Nasedkina and Gabrielle Rudy left their marks on the Drexel Women’s Swimming & Diving record book at the Patriot Invitational on Thursday. Rudy posted the best time in program history in the 200 IM, clocking in at two minutes, 2.41 seconds. Nasedkina touched the wall in the 50 free finals in 23.18.

Rudy leapfrogged April Forsthoffer, who completed the 200 IM in 2:03.21 in February 2017. Nasedkina edged past Rachel Bernhardt and Emily Kosten, who previously shared the 50 free record with a time of 23.21.

Nasedkina and Rudy were in on Drexel’s lone gold-medal finish of the day. Teaming with Alexa Kutch and Hollie Hopf, the Dragons took first in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:44.30. Counting the winning 400 medley relay team, Drexel earned 13 top-10 finishes on Thursday, including four podium finishes.

Rudy posted her record mark in the preliminaries and entered the finals of the 200 IM seeded second. She earned a bronze medal in the finals with a time of 2:02.62. Megan Sicinski finished just behind Rudy in fourth, clocking in at 2:04.29 to further solidify her hold on the fourth-best time in team history.

Nasedkina turned in back-to-back personal bests in the 50 free. She clocked in at 23.45 in the prelims before shaving another .27 seconds off her mark in the finals, where she finished second. Kutch placed eighth in the event, and Styer won the B final for a ninth-place result. Earlier in the day, Styer registered the 10^th-fastest time school history in the event.

The 200 free relay team of Rudy, Kutch, Styer and Nasedkina turned in a silver finish with a time of 1:34.01.

Olivia Shaffer and Maddie Riley placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 500 free. Shaffer clocked in at 5:00.07 in the finals for the eighth-fastest time in Drexel history. Riley posted the second-fastest preliminary time at 4:58.10, the seventh-best mark in team history.

On the boards, Becca Demaree finished seventh in the 3 meter with a finals score of 204.10. She scored a 222.60 in the preliminaries.

Through 12 events, the Dragons sit in second place behind only Florida Atlantic. The Owls lead the field with 274 points. Drexel has 252, 43 ahead of third-place UNCW.

The Patriot Invitational resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m.

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason swimming and diving teams completed the first day of competition at the Patriot Invitational, with the men’s team in third place and the women’s team in fourth place after day one of the three-day event held at the Jim McKay Natatorium.

The Mason men’s team has 227 points after day one.  UNCW has the lead with 256.5 points and Drexel is second with 245.5 points, followed by Mason (227), Florida Atlantic (221), UMBC (121), Seton Hall (95), Shippensburg (38) and American (29).

The team of seniors Christopher Stankiewicz and Ryan Donnelly, along with junior Drake Moretz and sophomore Will Rastatter placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:21.44).

Each of the top three teams, Drexel (1:21.11), UNCW (1:21.36) and Mason (1:21.44), broke the meet record in the event.

Donnelly finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.36), with freshman Jackson Knouse fifth in the B-Final of the event (4:39.81).

Stankiewicz placed eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (20.86), while Rastatter won the B-Final of the event (20.70).

In the 200-yard IM, freshman Luke DeVore just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish (1:51.49), while senior Attila Kiss placed fifth (1:52.78) and junior Devin Truong was sixth (1:53.44).  Kiss finished 10th in the 200-yard IM last season in the Patriot Invitational.

Senior Gerald Hodges, Jr. made the podium with a third-place finish in the one-meter diving event with a score of 290.40.

In the final event of the night, the combination of senior Logan Eubanks, Stankiewicz, Moretz and Truong placed fifth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:19.88).

On the women’s side, Mason is in fourth place with 161 points after the first day of competition.  Florida Atlantic has the lead with 274 points, Drexel is second with 252 points and UNCW is third with 209 points.  Seton Hall is in fifth place (120), followed by Richmond (115), American (64) and UMBC (45).

The combination of juniors Shannon Glesing and Jacquee Clabeaux, along with sophomore Ariana Lewis and freshman Emily Lewantowicz placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.07).

Clabeaux took the top spot on the podium in the 200-yard IM (2:00.69).  Glesing was fourth in the B-Final of the 50-yard freestyle (23.98).

Sophomore Hannah Milikich finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.05).  In the B-Final of the event, freshman Laura Ashton placed third (5:01.32) and sophomore Megan Cummins was fourth (5:01.71).

In the 400-yard medley relay, freshman Leah Riley, Clabeaux, Lewis and Milikich combined to take second place (3:45.10).

The second day of competition is Friday, with the prelims scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., diving at 1 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m.

Fairfax, Va. –  In his first ever Patriot Invitational, freshman Justin Oosterwyk (Pequannock, N.J.) captured first place in the C Final of the 500 Free. Oosterwyk finished in front of the field with a time of 4:36.53.

After day one, the Pirates find themselves in the middle of the packed field with eight schools from up and down the east coast.

Sophomore Ben LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.) continued his strong fall season with another good performance in the A Final of the 500 free with a time of 4:33.42.

The Pirates will compete again on Friday for Day Two of the Patriot Invitational. The schedule for Friday will go as follows:

Fairfax, Va. –  Freshman Abigail Graham (Edmonton, Alberta) made a strong impression at her first appearance in the Patriot Invitational. Graham took first in the C Final of the 50 Free, taking the event in a time of 24.05 edging out the competition by a tenth of a second in an exciting finish.

Following the first day of action, the Pirates find themselves in the middle of the packed field with eight schools from up and down the east coast.

Junior Marianne Molloy (Toms River, N.J.) had herself a career day in the pool setting lifetime swims in both the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Backstroke in the 400 Medley Relay. Molloy touched the wall in a time of 2:05.31 in the 200 IM and followed up her strong performance with a time of 56.74 in her leg of the 400 Medley Relay.

The Pirates will compete again on Friday for Day Two of the Patriot Invitational. The schedule for Friday will go as follows:

FAIRFAX, Va. – Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) and Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.) each earned a spot on the Richmond All-Time Top Ten for their performances in the 200 individual medley Thursday evening at the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason. The pair turned in times of 2:02.46 and 2:03.64, respectively. Purcell’s time ranks fifth all-time, while Manning’s is tenth. As a team, the Spiders are currently in sixth place, having tallied 115 points. Florida Atlantic currently leads the invitational with 274 points.

The 200-relay team of Manning, Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.), Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) and Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.) earned a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:36.12. The quartet of Jordan Kohut (Raleigh, N.C.), Mallory Shake (Lexington, Ky.), Rachel Pak (Fairfax, Va.) and Kristine Mihm (Wexford, Pa.) added four points with a time of 1:38.97. The 400-medley relay team of Gouger, Purcell, Claire O’Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.) and Medlin finished fourth at 3:47.41, good for the team’s season-best time.

Medlin earned individual points in the 50-yard freestyle, tallying four with a 24.01 time, .02 off her season best.

Emma Yeakley (Cornelius, N.C.) tallied 11 points in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 225.95. Ava Tuggle (Archdale, N.C.) was earned nine points with a ninth-place finish with a 218.20 score and senior Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.) earned a 12^th place finish with a score of 210.05, good for five points.

The Spiders return to the pool tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for the second day of the three-day Invitational at George Mason.

FAIRFAX, Va. – Two finishes earned top 16 times in program history for American University swimming and diving on day one at the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason.

DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS

• The best overall result came from junior Natalie Hamlet who placed eighth in the A final of the 200 individual medley.
• Hamlet’s prelims time of 2:06.55 ranks as the seventh-best at AU and was also the seventh-best of 64 competitors in the field.
• Freshman Jonathan Quick turned in the best result for the men’s team, finishing first in the B final and recording the fifth best time overall among 52 swimmers in the 500 freestyle, 4:33.86.
• Quick’s time is the 12th-best in AU program history in the 500 free.
• The foursome of Alex Brosvik, Eleanor Felton, Kyra Manson and Abby Longstaff took fifth-place in the 200 freestyle relay in a season-best time of 1:35.84.
• Brosvik had a busy day individually as well. Her prelims time of 23.89 in the 50 freestyle was a season best and earned her a spot in the B final where she placed 18th overall. Brosvik also swam a season-best time of 2:08.45 in the 200 individual medley to place 15th of 64 competitors.
• Ellie Kight improved her season best twice in the 500 freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:03.47 in the C final to place 18th overall.

Fairfax, Va. – UMBC senior Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) won the 50-yard freestyle as the Retrievers completed the first of three days of competition at the Patriot Invitational at George Mason University.

Rattsev qualified first with a morning swim of 20.50 and raced by the outstanding field in the finals, posting a time of 20.25. Sophomore Tiago Asakawa (Sumaré, Brazil) placed tenth in the event in a time of 20.74.

Retriever junior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Sam Jyawook (Franklin, Tenn.) each placed in the top eight in the 500 freestyle. Wisner touched in fifth place in a time of 4:34.08, while Jyawook came in eighth at 4:37.83.

Senior diver Ben Parker (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and freshman Will Henrickson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) finished 11^th and 12^th respectively in the 1-meter event. Parker amassed 221.25 points, while Henrickson totaled 207.30

On the ladies’ side, senior Hayley Committe (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) turned in the best individual performance, placing tenth (23.90) in the 50-yard freestyle.

Senior diver Abby Biddulph (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) earned a point with a 16^th place finish (202.20) on the 3-meter board.

The men amassed 121 points on the day and sit in fifth place of the eight teams competing. UNCW leads after one day with 256.50 points. The women accumulated 45 points and sit in eighth place after six events.

The competition continues on Friday and Saturday at the Jim McKay Natatorium.

Sophomore Andrew Hale swam the second-fastest time in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) in school history on Thursday as the Shippensburg University men’s swimming team started strong at the 2019 Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason University.

Shippensburg posted 13 times that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard to set the pace for an important weekend. The Raiders train for the Patriot Invitational as a signature meet of the fall schedule and are aiming for their fastest times yet of the season.

The signature individual performance was the ‘C’ final of the 200 IM by Hale, who improved upon his lifetime best by six-tenths of a second with a time of 1:53.79. It moves him from fourth to second in school history for the event, trailing only Sean Minford (1:52.52 in 2013). Hale qualified for the evening final by swimming 1:54.99 in the morning prelims.

To get the evening session started, the quartet of junior Hunter Keck, Hale, sophomore Trevor Woolwine and senior Jeff Beyer broke 1:25 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, posting a ninth-place time of 1:24.94. It is the fastest 200-yard freestyle relay for Shippensburg in eight years, since Jamie Kendall, Eddie LaNoue, Chris Bankert and Shawn Robbins swam 1:24.78 at the 2011 PSAC Championships.

Also in the 200 IM, sophomore Matt Bochanski came within six-tenths of a second of his lifetime best with a time of 1:56.19. Woolwine set a new lifetime best in the event by more than two seconds, posting a time of 1:57.37. Fellow sophomore Vin Salvatore also achieved an improvement to his PR with a time of 1:58.59.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Keck was the fastest of the Raiders with a time of 21.57 seconds. Hale improved his lifetime best to 21.67 seconds, and freshman Elijah Zinn enhanced his college best to 21.96 seconds. Woolwine and senior Adam Fox also had PSAC cuts.

Beyer paced five Raiders in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.60. Junior Eric Zimmerman swam 4:52.52. Freshmen Michael Hannig and David Bussard each met the PSAC standard with respective times of 4:57.34 and 4:58.14. Hannig’s time was a lifetime best of more than seven seconds.

The night was capped off with Hannig, Bochanski, Salvatore and Keck completing the 400-yard medley in 3:29.10 – SU’s fastest time in the event since the 2016 PSAC Championships.

Competition resumes at 10 a.m. Friday.
