On day 3 of the 2017 Irish Open Championships, 18-year-old Conor Ferguson made history as the first Irish man to swim under 2:00 in the 200 back. In prelims, Ferguson smashed the barrier with a 1:59.29. He was even faster than that in finals, winning gold in 1:58.80.
Another Irish National Record went down in the men’s 100 fly courtesy of Brendan Hyland. He went up against Connor Brines, who had set the record earlier this year. Brines took the slight lead through the halfway point, but Hyland was significantly faster on the back half, winning in 53.26 to Brines’ 54.13.
Jordan Sloan and Rachel Bethel continued their winning streaks tonight in the 400 free. After punching his ticket to the 2017 World Championships in the 200 free, Sloan put up a personal best 3:55.47 to win the men’s race. Bethel took control of the women’s field, surging ahead in the final 100 after battling closely with Shannon Russell (4:22.24).
