In finals on day one of the 2018 Brazil (Maria Lenk) Trophy in Rio de Janeiro, Minas’ Fernando Scheffer set a new South American and Brazilian record in the men’s 400m free.

Scheffer, 20, split 26.61/29.65/29.71/29.75/29.08/28.78/28.42/27.06 en route to his winning time of 3:49.06. He broke Brandonn Almeida’s previous record of 3:49.46. Almeida, who is a freshman at the University of South Carolina, took 7th in the event with a 3:52.88.

In addition to the 400, Scheffer is slated to swim the 100 and 200 free, and is entered with a 50.33 and 1:47.40 in those, respectively. His previous best time in the 400 was 3:50.75.

Between Scheffer and Almeida, Luiz Melo took second in 3:50.51, Giuliano Rocco third in 3:50.85, Guilherme Costa fourth in 3:50.96, Miguel Valenta 5th in 3:51.27, and Matheus Ferreira took 6th in 3:52.51.

While winners are usually awarded 35 points towards their team’s overall score, because he broke the national record, Scheffer was awarded a whopping 85 points for the win.

Sheffer just split a 1:44:84 as 3rd leg on Men Relay..

3.49.06 would not be remotely internationally competitive. This underscores just how weak Brazilian swimming is outside of the men’s sprint events.

Baby steps. Look at how far Asia’s men’s freestyle has come.

2 years Ago brazil did not have anyone under 15:15 on the 1500, now sub-15 become a Reality

Kinks in the system??? The partial times of Scheffer don’t add:
26.61 29.65 29.97 29.75 29.08 28.78 28.42 27.06 = 3’49s32

Highly doubt he was 25.9 the third 50, based on the rest of his splits I assume a 29.9
