Ferreira Clinches 100 Free Title At José Finkel Trophy

2019 JOSÉ FINKEL TROPHY (CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO INTERCLUBES ABSOLUTO DE NATAΣÄO)

The 2019 José Finkel Trophy concluded on Saturday, with Marco Ferreira topping the podium in the men’s 100m freestyle. The 20-year-old produced a gold medal-worthy effort of 48.48 in the final to represent just 1 of 2 swimmers to dip under the 49-second threshold. Joining him was runner-up Felipe Ribeiro Souza who stopped the clock at 48.89 for silver.

For Ferreira, the Minas Tenis swimmer raced at last year’s Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo, Japan, registering a split of 48.53 on Brazil’s gold medal-winning men’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Just one month after the competition, however, Ferreira underwent surgery for appendicitis, rendering him out of the water while he recovered.

Ferreria did compete at the Maria Lenk in April of this year, with the meet representing Brazil’s qualifying competition for this year’s World Championships, but the man finished 8th in the 100m free in 49.10 and 17th in the 50m free in 23.06.

He raced at the Summer Universiade (World University Games) in Naples this past July, giving Brazil 100m free bronze in a mark of 48.57. His even faster time from this meet means Ferreira is moving in the right direction.

Here in Paraná it was Aline Rodrigues who got her hand on the wall first in the women’s edition of the 100m free race, logging a winning mark of 55.78. That edged out Alessandra Marchioro‘s time of 55.88, with the pair representing the only swimmers to delve into the sub-56 second territory.

The 2019 Pan American Games champion in the men’s 200m fly, Leonardo de Deus, got the job done in his pet event at this meet as well, putting up the winning time of 1:56.79. He split 55.67/1:01.12 to claim 200m fly gold, about a second behind his winning mark of 1:55.86 from Lima, Peru.

Additional Winners:

  • The women’s 400m IM saw Gabrielle Goncalves take the meet title in a time of 4:52.56, while Icaro Pereira notched 4:24.82 to win the men’s race.
  • Julia Sebastian reaped the top prize in the women’s 100m breast in 1:08.05, with Andreas Mickosz following suit for the men’s 100m breast race in an effort of 1:00.64.
  • The women’s 200m fly saw Nathalia Almeida get it done for gold in 2:17.72.

All told, Minas Tenis came away with the overall team trophy, amassing a total of 2824.50 points. That crushed the competing teams, leaving Corinthians to place 2nd in 1199.50, while Pinheiros rounded out the top 3 squads with 1165.00 points.
