Feud Nation: Ryan Lochte vs. Michael Phelps

My brother is known in my family for his humor, intelligence and hard work. Apart from his “day job”, he is also has his own YouTube Channel called “Feud Nation.”

He selects usually two categories of a movie, comic book, T.V show, or video game and he picks the pros and cons of each item and decides which one is the “best.” He has a group of very loyal fans that will usually comment on his videos and tell Adam which one they thought should win the feud.

My brother is many wonderful things. His only flaw is that he knows absolutely nothing about swimming. As a former swimmer myself, it has consumed my life and over the years (but mostly the last few days) I have tried to teach him all that I can about the sport.

With his new found “knowledge” him and I decided to make a Feud Nation episode involving not only swimming for the first time, but sports in general. In light of the Olympics being over, we thought we would debate on the two greatest male athletes this sport has ever seen, Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps.

Obviously, both of these swimmers are talented, hard working and have done so much for this sport and their accolades show it. Yes, we are aware some of the videos/pictures are not Ryan Lochte but hey, he is just learning and it’s just a fun video.

Go to Adam’s YouTube channel and vote as well for your opinion on how won the debate. You can also watch more of his videos there, enjoy!

I think everyone in sports has a rival. I’ve had several, and still have a few today. I’m not the GOAT but I enjoy racing (even losing to) my rivals. How can we find out who Michael Phelp’s rival is? Ask him who he gets up for racing against. I didn’t see any article titled “who is the GOAT?”. Because if that were the title, the flavor of the day always seems to win. But wait … wasn’t Johnny Weissmuller the GOAT? Wait, no … it was Mark Spitz. Uh, wait … Ian Thorpe … or Aleksandr Popov. Oh, I get it … the ‘All Time’ means THIS time and that probably would be …MIchael Phelps! Until the next GOAT.

To me the interesting thing is the Michael is a phenom – from the age of 15. Lochte didn’t really even peak until post college. I would think most young swimmers would find (beyond public antics) Lochte to be a more identifiable role model in terms of put in the hard work and the rewards will come. But from a public standpoint, Phelps changed the sport and Lochte just built on it.
Regardless of the discussion, it’s still so amazing the USA had both guys at the same time and our prior medal hauls at worlds and Olympics sure benefited. Been an amazing 12 years.

This 1000x. To say it wasn’t a rivalry at their peak is dumb.

Especially when Phelps was the best guy in the world at 19 and Locthe was a freshman at Florida probably still thinking his best event was the 1650.

Phelps all the way. Totally agree with YADA. The 10% that Ryan won were Michaels off days.

If the 10% were his off days why couldn’t he beat the 200 IM World Record on his on days?

Phelps have never swam 200IM at his absolute peak. Same as 100 fly because they’re always at the end of his big schedule.

Phelps have never swam 200 IM at his absolute best. Same as 100 fly. They both come at the end of his program where he seldomly post best times.
