JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU swim team opened the season strong, Saturday afternoon at the UNF Invitational, taking home the title with 888.5 points, 73.5 points ahead of second-place Georgia Southern in the six-team event.
The Eagles won 12 races – six individual races and six relays. Seniors Petra Halmai (Dombovar, Hungary/Lanczos Kornel Secondari Grammar School)and Wiktoria Czarnecka (Lublin, Poland/Liceum NR 10 W Lublinie), who each won two individual races. Freshman Macy Mullis (Colbert, Ga./Madison County HS) and Claire McAtee (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) also added wins for FGCU.
“Coming into today we knew the team was tired after some really strong early season training,” said head coach Dave Rollins. “We raced, a lot. Many back-to-back races, with only a couple of minutes between them. Heading into the second half of the meet, the team really stepped up their energy and support for one another and it absolutely helped us finish the day strong.”
Mullis started the day with a victory in the 50-yard backstroke, taking the race with a time of 27.20 in her first-career race as an Eagle. Halmai followed with a win in the 50 breast (30.20) before winning the 100-yard IM with a time of 59.42, the only swimmer under a minute.
Czarnecka swept the butterfly events with wins in the 50 fly (25.60) and the 100 fly (56.90), both of which are top times in the CCSA so far this season. McAtee rounded out the individual wins for the Eagles, touching first in the 100 back with a time of 57.86.
Czarnecka also had a second-place finish in the 50 free (23.95) while Halmai took home third in the 50 fly (26.09).
Sophomore Emma Hixenbaugh (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS), junior Hailey Jerew (Miami, Fla./Cutler Bay Senior HS), junior Anna Hogan (Louisville, Ky./Dupont Manual HS), junior Lucija Sulenta (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija I Ekonomska Skola Benedikta Kotruljevica), and sophomore Sophia Macaisa (Inverness, Fla./Lecantho HS) all had solid days with fourth-place finishes in their respective races. Hixenbaugh finished fourth in the 100-yard back (59.21), Jerew was fourth in the 50 free (24.44), Hogan was fourth in the 50 breast (31.15), Sulenta was fourth in the 50 back (27.66), and Macaisa was fourth in the 50 fly (26.27).
In the relays, the Eagles claimed victories in six of the seven races on the day. After winning the 200-yard medley relay to begin the session, FGCU touched first in the 300 back relay, 300 fly relay, 300 breast relay, 500 free relay, and 400 medley relay as well.
The Eagles will return to the pool for their home opener against Vanderbilt on October 16.

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Luis Viberti won two individual races while J.J. Saslo, Kyle Micallef, Brandon Wilson, and Brandon Dyck each posted wins at the University of North Florida Season Kick-off here Saturday at the UNF Aquatic Center. In addition, the Moccasins swept all six relays in the event as Florida Southern took top honors with a team score of 988.5 points.
Viberti took first place in the 50-breaststroke with a time of 25.75 and later also placed first in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a 55.96 mark. Also winning individual events for Florida Southern was J.J. Saslo who grabbed first place honors in the 50-butterfly at 22.70 and Kyle Micallef who tapped the wall first in the 50-freestyle with a 20.93 time. A pair of Brandons took the next two wins for the Moccasins as Brandon Wilson came in first in the 100-individual medley at 52.92 and Brandon Dyck was tops in the 100-backstroke with a 50.89 time.
In was all Florida Southern in the relay races as the Moccasins took first place in all six events.
In the 300-butterfly relay, it was the team of Miguel Bernotti, Cameron Lai-Harris, and Saslo winning with a 2:37.32 mark. The trio of Dyck, Jacobs Tuckerman, and Wilson took honors in the 300-backstroke relay with a 2:36.58 mark while Viberti, Ludwig Mueller, and Boris Mitev placed first in the 300-breaststroke relay at 2:54.28.
The team of Micallef, Luka Prostran, Elder Oliveira, and Keith Peristeridis grabbed top honors in the 500-freestyle relay at 4:10.61 while Dyck, Bernotti, Niko Frese, and Viberti came in first in the 400-medley relay with a 3:38.62 mark. The Mocs’ 400-freestyle individual relay also came in first at 3:11.06 (complete team results for this race were unavailable).

JACKSONVILLE — The 2021-22 North Florida swim team made a successful on-campus home debut with a sprints and relays meet at the UNF Competition Pool.
The meet marked the first hosted by the Ospreys on campus since 2014. North Florida was joined in the inaugural competition by teams from FGCU, Georgia Southern, Rollins, Florida Tech and Florida Southern.
Along with traditional meet events, Saturday’s competition also included some non-traditional relays like multiple 300yd races featuring three swimmers, 500yd free relay with each of four competitors swimming distances of 50yd increases and a 400yd individual IM relay showcasing each swimmer completing a 100yd IM.
“This was a very good day in the history of our program,” said UNF head coach Ian Coffey. “Having our first meet here on campus in the new pool was amazing. We had some very good swims and I was happy with the racing. Taylor Warren, Annie Fletcher and Lexi Calder had great days in the pool. With the season starting, we have no time to rest as we move on to next Saturday against Georgia Southern for our Senior Day.”
Sophomore Taylor Warren got the Ospreys started off strong in the meet’s opening event, earning a second-place finish in the 50yd backstroke with a time of 27.43. Warren added a fifth-place showing in the 100yd backstroke, clocking a time of 59.73. She also led off the Ospreys 300yd Back Relay trio that finished second in a time of 3:00.91.
Annie Fletcher, a senior for UNF, had a seventh-place finish in the 100yd backstroke (1:00.38), teammed with Warren on the second place 300yd relay team and anchored the Ospreys 500yd free relay squad that earned a runner-up finish (4:46.74).
Sophomore Lexi Calder had highlights of finishing 10th in the 50yd breaststroke (31.73) and 7th in 100yd breastroke (1:08.75).
North Florida recorded some other strong finishes in relays capped by a third-place showing in the 400yd Free relay (Marcia Shaw | Ashley Kephart | Gabriella Reeves | Ashley Cozad).
The Ospreys next hosts their first dual meet competition when Georgia Southern returns to the UNF Competition Pool on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Noon. North Florida will recognize its senior class prior to the start of the meet.
