FINA, the world governing body for 6 aquatic sports of pool swimming, diving, open water swimming, water polo, artistic swimming (synchro), and high diving, has opened bidding for the 2025 and 2027 World Aquatics Championships, which will include all 6. Interested federations and cities are due to notify FINA of their intention to bid by no later than November 26th, 2018.
Timeline for the bid:
- November 26, 2018 – Notice of interest to FINA due
- January 25, 2019 – Meeting with interested candidates in Lausanne
- April 25, 2019 – formal bids due to FINA
- Site visits
- July 11, 2019 – announcement of hosting duties in Gwangju, Korea
The two-meet simultaneous bidding follows the new pattern of awarding two meets in one bidding process. The 2025 and 2027 meets, however, will be awarded far earlier (6/8 years out) than the 2021 and 2023 meets were (5/7 years out).
The next 2 World Short Course Championships and next 3 World Aquatics Championships are all being hosted in Asia.
- 2018 (short course) – Hanzhou, China
- 2019 (long course) – Gwangju, South Korea
- 2020 (short course) – Abu Dhabi, UAE
- 2021 (long course) – Fukuoka, Japan
- 2022 (short course) – TBD
- 2023 (long course) – Doha, Qatar
- 2024 (short course) – Kazan, Russia
- 2025 (long course) – TBD
- 2026 (short course) – Budapest, Hungary
- 2027 (short course) – TBD
FINA will continue to host the World Aquatics Championships in conjunction with the World Masters Championships in the same facilities.
GC theoretically could given they just hosted CG
So from next July we’ll know the location of every global long course meet until LA 2028. I’d imagine Europe will get at least one of 2025 or 2027 after three consecutive World Championships (long course) in Asia.
Also 6 of the next 7 global championships in Asia from Dec 2018-Oct 2023 when you include Tokyo 2020. The other being in Kazan, Russia which is on the doorstep of Asia being the same longitude as parts of Iran.
Doha seems to have done a great deal so far : The soccer world cup ( which i feel will be a mess due to the heat in summer & lack of attendance + they are not a soccer powerhouse ) & now LC world champs …very weird indeed
Just got back from 2 short stays in Doha- it is a dump…I have been to over 50 countries in the last 10 years, and for all its wealth, Doha has absolutely nothing going for it.
When I was there it was 47 degrees C (116F) and 60 percent humidity!
Is it Fukoka or Fukuoka ? thats where Ervin won that 50 free gold isn’t it a few years back ( 2000 ? )
Worlds2001 at Fukuoka (Japan), with perhaps the best Thorpe ever and the first Phelps gold medal in 200 fly.
For all six sports in one city, there is a need for facilities that aren’t available in any American city. The following all has to come together:
1) 10,000+ seats for the main competition pool, which could be built on a temporary basis in many sports arenas in the USA. We know we can fill 16,000 for Trials, so no problem selling tickets.
2) Diving facility with all the boards, including platforms wide enough for synchronized diving. Since the tank has to be 17’ deep, that’s a different challenge than building a 10’ deep Swim pool. 2000-3000 seats minimum.
3) Pools for water polo, separate from the Swim competition pools. Pool for finals could be in the main… Read more »
It was announced last year that Kazan and Budapest would host the 2022 and 2024 world short course championships.

I wrote it and still forgot. Classic. Thanks, updating now.
If the US can put on a profitable Olympic Trials then why not worlds? (Assuming they make money in Omaha?)
Because they’d need a facility that doesn’t have anything happening within it for about a month? I bet there’s very few cities that have that and are willing to take the financial risk for what’s not really all that popular in the USA (especially compared to OT’s and the Olympics themselves).
FINA slush fund payment and in-kind ‘donations’ requirements from a host city are extremely high
Toronto is considering a bid for 2027
