Final Day of Portuguese Open Nats Brings Down One More Junior Record

The 2015 Portuguese Open Nationals concluded today from Coimbra, but not without yet another junior record falling during the final session to bring the total number of junior national records broken to 8 on the meet.

Alexandre Coutinho rocked a new 800m freestyle Portuguese junior national record, taking second place in the event with a mark of 8:15.65.  That time surpassed Fernando Costa’s previous record of 8:16.64 on the books since 2003.  Oli Mortensen took first in tonight’s 800 event, scoring an 8:15.60 for his efforts.

Also winning tonight was English swimmer Rebecca Guy who touched the wall first in the women’s 10m freestyle, clocking a time of 55.78, a mark not too off her personal best of 55.30 she earned at this year’s British Nationals.

Portuguese stand-out swimmer Victoria Kaminskaya took the women’s 200m IM event by three seconds over the field tonight.  She finished the race in a time of 2:16.62 for the win, just a little more than a second over her national record of 2:15.47 set in 2013.

The men’s 200m butterfly was the closest race of the evening among the top 3 finishers, with the podium positions being decided by just six tenths of a second.  Nuno Quintanilha got his hand on the wall first in a time of 2:00.18, followed narrowly behind by Sam Horrocks in 2:00.69 and Thomas Paine in 2:00.75. They were the only sub-2:01 swimmers in the race tonight.
