Final Day of Western Sectionals Recap

FEDERAL WAY, Washington – The King Aquatic Club’s killer relays finished the Western Section Sectionals (held March 11-15) by qualifying for Winter Junior Nationals along with missing the meet records by a fraction of a second.

King Aquatic event champions from Sunday night featured Adela Chambers – who won the mile by just .15 seconds – swimming a time of 16:58.35. Zachary Wagner took the 50 free by over a tenth of a second, winning it at a :20.28 while the women’s medley finished second to Fort Collins Aquatics. Even with their loss in the 4-medley, though, the King Aquatic Club would win the meet.

Emma Schanz – a 17-year-old swimmer for UNA Swat that we’ve been following throughout Western Sectionals – started off the night with a summer nationals-qualifying time in the 200 IM of 1:58.29. Schanz, who won by nearly a second, was the only woman under 1:59.00 and also the only one to qualify for summer nationals in this event.

In the women’s 50 free, Gillian St. John of Lobo Aquatics swam a :23 low at prelims then came back at finals with a speedy :22.86. In the 400 medley, St. John swam a :50.43 on the anchor leg to give Lobo Aquatics a sixth place finish in the event.

For the men’s 2-IM, Thomas Brewer set a new Western Sectionals record – swimming a quick 1:46.38 to win the event by over a second.

In the mile, 16-year-old Keegan Foulke – of the Jeffco Hurricanes – finished first by nearly three seconds, coming to an unrivaled 15:31.99.

Overall many swimmers qualified for winter nats. and had great swims!
