Canadian star IM’er Finlay Knox won bronze in the men’s 200 IM tonight in Melbourne, speeding to a 1:51.04. Not only was he just 0.08 seconds behind Carson Foster in second place, Knox smashed his own Canadian Record with the performance. Knox’s previous best of 1:52.32, which was also the Canadian Record, was set last fall at an ISL meet in September.

Knox was exceptional tonight, sitting in fifth at the 150m then exploding on the final 50 to pull into third. He came home in a 26.83, which was the fastest split in the field.

Here is a split comparison between Knox’s previous Canadian Record performance and his swim tonight.

Knox made all of his improvement in the middle of the race, splitting 28.08 on back and 31.89 on breast. That means Knox was 59.97 on the middle 100, compared to a 1:01.25 on his previous Canadian Record.

With the swim, Knox has won his first World Championships medal of his career. The 21-year-old has had a phenomenal year, breaking the Canadian Record in the LCM 200 IM back in April at the Canaduan Trials with a 1:57.50. He swam well at the Commonwealth Games over the summer as well, placing fourth in the 200 IM  and making the final of the 100 fly.
