Firth forced to withdraw from World Championships

Paralympic Champion Bethany Firth has been forced to pull out of the British Team that will compete at the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow later this month.

Firth fractured her wrist in training this week and will no longer be able to compete at the competition. The world record holder will now begin a rehabilitation plan supported by the British Para-Swimming Sport Science and Medicine staff.

Firth said: “I am really upset to no longer be able to compete in Glasgow. I have been really looking forward to being a member of the British Team and I was feeling in really good shape.

“The accident happened in my training and I don’t have enough time to recover in order to compete at the worlds. I know I will be supported by the British Para-Swimming staff and Sports Institute Northern Ireland (SINI) to get back to my best for next year.”

“I want to wish my team-mates the best of luck for the competition. I know that they will be amazing and will show how good they are.”

Head Coach Rob Greenwood said: “I know Bethany is really disappointed to miss this competition. She was looking forward to Glasgow and representing Great Britain for the first time. She has been training and competing well, only last week she broke the S14 World Record in the 200 Freestyle.”

“Our medical team will now work closely with Bethany and her support team in order to make sure her rehab goes smoothly.”

“The rest of the team is in a good place and our athletes and coaches preparation is going well. The team are still focused on our objectives and that won’t change. I like the rest of the team are looking forward to the performances of our athletes.”
