Five Magnolia Aquatic Club (MAC) athletes are competing at the Phillips 66 National Championship at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, IN between June 27 and July 1.
The meet also serves as the selection event for the USA National Teams competing at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest Hungary (July 14-30), the 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan (Aug. 19-30), and the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis (Aug. 23-28).
The following athletes are competing at the Phillips 66 National Championship:
- Joy Field, 18, will compete in the distance freestyle events. Last year at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Maui, HI, Field won gold in the 1,500-M freestyle and silver in the 800-M freestyle. Field, who won the Texas 5A high school state 500-yard freestyle event, graduated from Magnolia High School last month. She will be attending Texas A&M as a freshman this fall to study and swim.
- Emily Reese, 17, will focus on the butterfly events, which is a stroke she competed in at last year’s U.S. Olympic Trials and placed second in at the Texas 6A high school state meet in the 100-yard butterfly for The Woodlands High School. She will be a freshman this fall at the University of Texas, where she will also swim.
- Lucie Nordmann, 17, will contend for national team spots in the 100-M and 200-M backstroke events, which are the events she was a double silver medalist in at the 2016 Junior Pac Pacific Championship. Nordmann, who will be a senior at The Woodlands High School this fall, is the Texas 6A high school champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
- Kaitlynn Sims, 16, will compete in the distance freestyle events. As a sophomore in February, she won the Texas 6A high school title in the 500-yard freestyle. She is also the third-place finisher at the 2016 Winter Junior Nationals (West) in the 1650-yard freestyle this past December. Sims will be a junior at Montgomery High School this fall.
- Lillie Nordmann, 14, who is entering her sophomore year at The Woodlands High School, is a five-time winner at the 2017 Short Course Texas Age Group Swimming Championship in March. Nordmann, who is entering her sophomore year at The Woodlands High School, will compete in the butterfly, freestyle, and individual medley events.
“The girls are very excited to compete,” said Terry Jones, MAC’s Head Coach. “The team and coaches are looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish, especially with all the hard work they have put in.”
Jones said these girls are a product of a club culture characterized by hard work and team support. “Iron sharpens iron,” he said, noting the team has more than 30 athletes who received all-state honors this year from the Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (TISCA), and that many of them were major contributors to the high school teams that won the Girls’ 5A State Championship (Magnolia High School) and Girls’ 6A State Championship (The Woodlands High). “We are blessed with many talented and hardworking kids,” he said.
