Manaudou Scratches 100 Free: “I’m Clearly Not Ready For This Meet”

After a lackluster performance in the 50 freestyle yesterday, Florent Manaudou was unsure about what he was going to do today in the 100 freestyle. The World Champion won the event in Angers last night at the French Short Course National Championships, but he didn’t perform to his standards. Manaudou finished with a 21.20 managed to get the win, but he was challenged, and nearly out-touched, by teammate Clément Mignon (21.28). Veteran Frédérick Bousquet came in third with 21.68.

“I was expecting to go a bit faster. We’ll see what happens tomorrow with the 100m free. I’m clearly not ready for this meet. I will decide after Amsterdam if I am really going to go after the 100 [at French Olympic trials] in Montpellier.” – Manaudou after his 50 freestyle.

The 25 year old officially scratched the 100 freestyle this morning. In his absence, Yannick Agnel officially posted the fastest time in prelims of 47.51. That time is still two and half seconds off the French National record.

Manaudou is coming off of a great summer. At the 2015 FINA World Championships he won three gold medals in the 50 freestyle, 50 butterfly, and 4×100 freestyle relay.

He may not beat the field by more than .1. Seriously maybe injury concerns? 50m olympic gold is his unless he gets injured or Nathan Adrian can find another 2/10-3/10 of speed.

I don’t get it. It’s just a 100. What could go wrong?

Manadou recently withdrew from some World Cup or Military events i recall due to injury. Hiw long has he been back in the water? Makes sense he wouldn’t prioiritize 100m at this scm meet if he knows he will swim slow times because his endurance is not there yet.
