Florida Gulf Coast ended up with two wins in one day after a hastily rescheduled meet brought them into competition with both Florida Atlantic and Miami.
The Eagles were initially supposed to swim at Miami Friday night, but pool heating issues caused that meet to be cancelled. Instead of going back to Fort Meyers empty handed, Florida Gulf Coast was allowed to join the already scheduled meet between Miami and Florida Atlantic.
FGCU beat Miami by a score of 166-111, and absolutely crushed FAU to the tune of 219-60. The Eagles won more than half the events outright with a balanced attack, also capturing both relays. Miami bested FAU by a score of 197-84.
Katie Armitage was in a class of her own, easily taking both breaststroke races. In the 100 she was over a second ahead of her own teammate, Evita Leter, and she won the 200 breaststroke by three seconds. Elise Haan was also a double stroke winner for the Eagles, taking the 100 and 200 backstroke. Both swimmers also swam on FGCU’s winning 200 medley relay.
Christina Elmgreen seized the 200 butterfly and SwimSwam’s own Lani Cabrera was well ahead in the 500 freestyle for FGCU.
Katie Latham led a 1-2 sweep in the 50 freestyle, while Barbara Caraballo led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM.
Miami did take several events on the day, especially capitalizing on their traditionally strong diving program. The Hurricane divers, Carolyn Chaney and Marcela Maric, went 1-2 in the both diving events. The two flipped spots, with Chaney winning the 1M and Maric taking the 3M crown.
Miami also managed a 1-2 swimming finish, with Angela Algee and My Fridell emerging victorious in the 100 butterfly.
Host Florida Atlantic’s top performer was Hannah Roper, who managed a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke to go along with third in the 100.
