Florida High School Region Roundup: Bolles Rolling In Class 1A

Florida’s high school swimming post-season continues, with the state’s smaller schools in classes 1A and 2A holding region meets over the weekend. Regions are the last major meet before the state championships.

Here’s a rapid-fire look at what happened in class 1A:

Bolles Bowls Over Region 1 Competition

The Bolles School won 21 of 24 events to rule Region 1 of class 1A. Bolles is the defending state champion in both boys and girls swimming in the small school class.

The Bolles boys swept the relays and got four wins and three automatic All-America cuts from Andy Song An. Song An showed his prowess through the long-axis strokes, winning the 200 free (1:41.22) and 100 back (49.68), with the latter being an automatic All-America time. He also led off the winning 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

Maybe the highlight swim on the girls side was St. Joseph senior Isabella Garofalo, who went 23.23 for an auto All-America cut in the 50 freestyle.

Lake Highland Prep Rolls Region 2 Behind Lowe’s Wins

Lake Highland Prep won the girls meet, beating Montverde and the tough Trinity Prep team that broke national short course meter high school records earlier in the season. Lake Highland Prep got a pair of wins from junior Carley Lowe, who went 2:03.72 to take the 200 IM and 4:55.77 for the 500 free title.

Trinity Prep had the night’s only auto All-America swim, with the 200 medley relay going 1:45.58. That included junior Claire Maiocco, who won two individual events – the 50 free (23.67) and 100 fly (55.51).

On the boys side, Trinity Prep won the meet, sweeping the free relays and getting a 50 free win from sophomore Matthew Degtyar in 22.30. Edgewood’s Lucas Kravchenko was unstoppable in his races, going 51.22 to win the 100 back and an All-American consideration time of 1:40.56 to take the 200 free.

Tampa Prep Tops Tampa Catholic in Intra-City Region 3 Battle

The Tampa Prep girls swept all three relays and got a sprint sweep from junior Maureen Moore (24.34 in the 50 free, 52.87 in the 100 free) to take the team title in region 3. Senior Savannah Savitt also won the 100 breast in 1:06.71 to led the team to the points title.

Tampa Catholic sophomore Christin Rockway was one of the more impressive performers, going 2:04.12 to win the 200 IM and 57.45 for the 100 fly title.

On the boys side, Berkeley Prep won the meet on depth, winning just two events and a relay. Freshman Ryaan Hatoum was the lone swimming winner, going 1:02.31 in the 100 breast to tie Oasis junior Michael Walch. Berkely also won the 400 free relay to close the meet with back-to-back wins, and diver Jesse Potts took home the region title.

Bishop Verot went 1-2 in the 500 free, led by Santiago Corredor‘s All-America consideration time of 4:33.31. The only other consideration time was Cardinal Mooney’s Matthew Garcia’s 50.02 in the 100 back.

Tjon-A-Joe’s Speed Highlights Region 4

Westlake Prep senior Raiz Tjon-A-Joe was the highlight of Region 4, hitting two automatic All-America times. He was 55.67 in the 100 breast and 20.46 in the 50 free, going essentially unchallenged in both.

Saint Andrew’s won the boys meet, bookending the event with relay wins in the 200 medley and 400 free. They won two of the final three races, with Nicholas Sharp taking the 100 back in 52.08 and Izaak Bastian taking second behind Tjon-A-Joe in the 100 breast before the 400 free relay won in 3:10.97.

The Pine Crest girls won on a deep team effort, winning only the 400 free relay (3:35.71). They also competed without star Marta Ciesla, who did not swim any events at the region meet after winning 4 events in the district round.

The girls meet was highlighted by a couple of very close races. University School’s Allison Kopas touched out Benjamin’s Alessandra Baldari 2:04.38 to 2:04.49 to win the 200 IM. Both are All-America consideration times. Baldari went another consideration time in the 100 fly, but was again touched out, with Westminster’s Jessica Nava going 54.87 to Baldari’s 54.89.

Other consideration times were Trinity Christian freshman Chade Nercisio in the 50 free (23.71) and Westminster’s Elizabeth Zubero in the 100 breast (1:04.53).
