Florida International came away with wins in 13 of 16 events against Florida Atlantic at the FAU Aquatic Center in Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday, February 3rd.

Florida Atlantic’s 3 wins came in the 100 back, 200 fly, and 100 free. Abby Marshall came away with the win in the 100 back, touching over a second ahead of Anna Topalanski (59.69). Marshall and Topalanski both went out in 28.97, but Marshall came back much faster at 29.46 to Topalanski’s 30.72.

Danica Garbett took the 200 fly by 2.56 seconds over Kara Wilkens, touching in 2:08.13 to Wilkens’ 2:10.69. Garbett’s win came in the 3rd 50, where she split 32.26 to Wilkens’ 34.44.

Melanie Doan won in a tight race with Kyna Pereira, touching in 54.45 to Pereira’s 54.61. Doan just barely outsplit Pereira on both 50s, 26.54 to 26.66/27.91 to 27.95.

Spence Atkins put up a pair of wins in the 1000 free and 400 IM. Atkins swam her fastest 1000 of the season to come away with the win, posting a 10:11.05 to win by 32 seconds. Atkins then won the 400 IM late in the meet, posting a 4:25.36, just off her season best of 4:25.01.

Event Winners

Press Release – FIU:

  • FIU defeated Florida Atlantic on the road in Boca Raton 179-118 for the final full meet of the regular season Saturday at the FAU Aquatic Center.
  • FIU won 11 of the 16 events, including both relays at the meet. The Panthers touched first in both relays, the 200 Medley and 400 Free, with seven different swimmers and two divers winning an individual race for the victory.
  • Two swimmers, senior Letizia Bertelli (Traviso, Italy) and freshman Sara Gyertyanffy (Desenzano, Italy) won an individual event and swam a leg in both relay victories.
  • Bertelli won event 13, the 100 Fly, beating teammate Stephanie Hussey (Beaconsfield, Quebec, Canada) by exactly one second, touching the wall at 56.27. She also swam the third leg of the 200 Medley, helping the squad turn in a 1:44.08 time in that opening event .She also took the second leg of the 400 Free, turning in a 3:31.58 time in that event.
  • Gyertyanffy won the 100 Breast in a time of 1:04.08, almost a second and a half faster than the three teammates who finished behind her. She went second in the 200 Medley Relay and swam the first leg of the 400 Free Relay.
  • The divers took the top four spots in both programs.
    • Freshman Rachel Foord won the 3-meter springboard, with a 314.40 score. Senior Rebecca Quesnel(Burlington, Ontario, Canada) was second again, with a season-best score of 302.70. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Haskell (London, Ontario, Canada) was third, at 298.57 and sophomore Brooke Bouchard (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) scored a season-best 296.04 in her program. All four scores were enough to qualify for NCAA Zones.
    • Haskell took the top spot in the 1-meter program with a 298.20 score. Quesnel was second, with a 275.47 score. Foord was third, at 270.75. All three scores are NCAA Zone-qualifying marks.
  • The other individual winners are as follows
    • Senior Kyna Pereira (Umkomass, South Africa) won the 200 Free, at 1:54.90, two-and-a-half seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
    • Redshirt junior Naomi Ruele (Gaborone, Botswana) won the 500 Free, sprinting to a 23.95 result.
    • Senior Skye Carey (Satellite Beach, Florida / Satellite HS) raced through the 200 Back field, with a Pr2:03.65 time, almost six seconds faster than the next swimmer.

    • Redshirt sophomore Nicole Hunnewell (Miami, Florida. Coral Reef HS) took the 200 Breast, at 2:19.43, more than eight seconds clear of the next result.
    • Sophomore Megan Bowen (Tavistock, England) was first in the 500 Free, almost eight second faster at 5:06.47 than second.

Next up for FIU
The Panther divers will compete against FGCU next Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Coral Springs Aquatic Center. The divers get a last chance to get in another competition on the platform ahead of the Conference USA Championships in two weeks.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – In the battle for the letter of A or I, the I proved the victor in Florida Atlantic University’s Saturday morning swim meet featuring FAU, as host, versus FIU. FIU captured the women’s only meet 179-118.

  • The Owls opened the meet with a salute to the day’s captain Bailey Grabenhorst. Mid-meet there was a definite barbeque smell, as if Super Bowl tailgating had started early. Upon further investigation, it was the FAU men’s team truly tailgating at the women’s meet, complete with hamburgers. The meet concluded with a cheer for FIU
  • Spence Atkins captured the first race of the day by more than 30 seconds, swimming the 1000-yard free in 10:11.05. She later captured the 400 IM with a time of 4:25.36, nearly 12 seconds ahead of teammate Danica Garbett (4:37.41)
  • Sharon KokNatalie Clausen and Lydia Musleh finished 2-4 in the 200 yard freestyle with times of 1:57.40, 1:57.49 and 1:59.75, respectively
  • Abigail Marshall won the 100-yard back with a time of 58.43. Just one other swimmer was under the minute mark
  • Danica Garbett won event six, the 200 yard butterfly, with a time of 2:08.13. She was followed by teammate Kara Wilkins with a 2:10.69 time
  • Melanie Doan was the winner of the 100-yard free (0:54.45) while FAU’s Kyleigh Firman, and Kelsey Witkay finished third (0:54.96) and fourth (55.01)
  • Ana Neff-Jendrasko was third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:28.51 finish
  • In the 500 free, FAU’s Holly Hopson (5:15.82), Madison Rizzo (5:16.24) and Sharon Kok (5:16.63) placed three, four, and five
  • Kyleigh Firman was third in the 100-yard butterfly (0:57.37)
  • FAU diver Lauren Beyer faced five Panthers to complete the field of six. She tallied a score of 249.22 for a fifth place finish
