Florida State Reels in Verbal from Canada’s Maddie McDonald

Maddie McDonald, from Windsor, Ontario, has given her verbal commitment for the 2018-19 season to Neal Studd and his coaching staff at Florida State University.

“I am so excited to announce my commitment to swim at Florida State University! I am beyond thankful for everyone that has helped me reach this point in my swimming and academic career. I can’t wait to be a part of such an amazing and talented team at such an outstanding school! Go ‘Noles!”

McDonald swims year-round for head coach Mike McWha at the Windsor Aquatic Club. She finished fourth at the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships in the 100m backstroke, and was a finalist in the 200m backstroke, 50m free, and 100m free; she also anchored WAC’s eighth-place 4x100m freestyle relay. McDonald won gold in the 50m free and silver in the 100m back at the 2016-17 OFSSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) Championships. At the 2017 Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships, she medaled in both the 50m back and 100m back. In 2016, she was Speedo Western Canadian champion in the 400IM.

McDonald has medaled five times while representing Windsor-Essex at three International Children’s Games: Windsor ’13, Lake Macquarie (AUS) ’14, and Alkmaar (NED) ’15.

A two-time Canadian Trials qualifier (2016 and 2017), her top times are:
