There are some recruits that are good in a lot of different events, and give their coaches lots of options on which events to focus on, enter them in, and develop.
Then there are those who do one thing so well, that even without that big versatility, they can prove to be huge for a college program.
Natalie Pierce from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to the far north of Detroit, has given a verbal commitment to Florida State.
Pierce was a 1:03.65 in the 100 yard breast at the 2011 NCSA Junior National Championships, but even the 1:04 she went as a junior puts her right in the thick of a relatively-deep breaststroke group that is led by sophomore Sami Pochowski.
She has flat-started a 28 in the 50 yard breaststroke, which also came when she was a freshman.
Frank Bradley’s new coaching staff will probably be working hard to get a little more out of her in other events. She doesn’t have even a second juniors cut to go with the 100, and her only other AAAA time is in the 200, where she’s been 2:24 in yards.
