For Now, Russia Remains Atop European Short Course Championships Medal Table

2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Through 2 days of the 2019 European Short Course Championships taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, the nation of Russia remains atop the overall medal standings. Yesterday Vlad Morozov made it happen for the nation, grabbing gold in the 50m breast and as a member of the Russian men’s 4x50m freestyle relay.

Although there were no individual gold medals for Russia tonight, the foursome of Kliment Kolesnikov, Morozov, Arina Surkova and Mariia Kameneva concluded the session with a monster performance in the 4x50m mixed medley relay. Collectively clocking a time of 1:36.22, the Russians produced a new World Record en route to the top of the podium, giving them a one gold medal lead over the next country in line, Italy.

Italian dynamo Simona Quadarella added gold for her nation, taking the top prize in the women’s 800m free in a time of 8:10.30. That brings the nation’s total to 2 golds, paired with 14-year-old Benedetta Pilato‘s 50m breaststroke victory from last night.

Lithuanian Danas Rapsys became a double winner, adding the 200m free to his 400m free win from night 1.  He single-handedly keeps Lithuania in the 4th slot in the medal standings.

Marius Kusch also entered his nation of Germany into the medal mix, taking gold in the 100m fly in 49.06.

The Netherlands saw two swimmers get atop the podium tonight, courtesy of Kira Toussaint and Arno Kamminga. After establishing a new Dutch national record and Championships record of 55.17 in the semi-final, Toussaint touched in 55.71 for gold in the women’s 100m back final.

Kamminga also did damage in his 200m breast event, improving from his 4th place finish in Copenhagen 2 years ago with a new national standard of 2:02.36 this evening.
