Bronx, N.Y. – (February 1, 2023) – The Fordham swimming & diving teams completed one of its finest regular seasons on Wednesday night going for 4-for-4 on wins over Wagner and St. Francis Brooklyn at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.

The Fordham women defeated Wagner, 186-100, and St. Francis Brooklyn, 206-77, to complete the team’s fourth undefeated dual meet season, joining the 2009-10, 2018-19, and 2021-22 teams.  For the men, the Rams recorded a 165-117 win over Wagner and a 176-107 win over St. Francis Brooklyn to complete an 8-1 regular season, the team’s best record since the 1990s.

The meet opened with a sweep of the 200 medley relay event, as Leire MartinEmma ShaughnessyAinhoa Martin, and Jessica Zebrowski placed first in 1:45.98, while the men’s group of Christian TaylorParis RaptisTaras Zherebetskyy, and Nicholas Chao won in 1:30.73.

The next Fordham sweep came in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke events.  Megan Morris took the top spot in the women’s 100 backstroke in 56.92 seconds, while Taylor grabbed first in the men’s event in 49.69 seconds.  Then in the 100 breaststroke, it was Alison Lin earning the event win in 1:07.39 while Kevin Zahariev took the men’s event in 58.91 seconds.

The 200 butterfly event saw Ellen Brooks add to the Rams’ event win total, as she won in 2:09.44, while in the 50 freestyle, it was Zebrowski (24.59) and Chao (21.03) taking first in the women’s and men’s event, respectively.

Zebrowski then won her second event of the night, taking first in the 100 freestyle in 52.45 seconds, while Zherebetskyy took first in the men’s event in 45.64 seconds.

A. Martin then picked up the event win in the 200 backstroke in 2:06.81, while Lin earned her second event win, placing first in the 500 freestyle in 5:04.51.

Fordham then swept the final three swimming events with the 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley, and 200 freestyle relay.  In the 100 butterfly, L. Martin won the women’s event in 58.08 seconds, while Taylor got his second event win in 50.93 seconds.  Morris then became a multi-event winner in the 200 individual medley in 2:05.56 with Daniel Langlois winning the men’s event in 1:57.58.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Fordham’s team of A. Martin, Zoei HowardMadeline Bergin, and Zebrowski posted the top time in 1:37.68, while the men’s team of Raptis, Taylor, Chao, and Zherebetskyy clocked in at 1:23.13.

The diving events also saw a Fordham sweep with Lilia de Oliveira Pelaez and Marco Petit taking first in both.  De Oliveira Pelaez won the one-meter event with a score of 267.80 and the three-meter event with a point total of 272.55.  Petit took both men’s events with scores of 199.80 (1M) and 210.90 (3M).

The Rams will now set their sights on the 2023 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship, which will be held February 15-18 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Bronx, NY  The Wagner College Swimming & Diving teams began its 2023 season with a tri-meet at Fordham on Wednesday night.

Along with Wagner and Fordham, St. Francis Brooklyn also competed at the event.

The men’s program finished in third place and the women’s program finished in second place.

On the women’s side of the pool, the Seahawks won its first matchup against St. Francis by 99 points, but fell against Fordham by a score of 186-100.

For the women, freshman Presley Staretz and senior Olivia Bishop occupied the top three of the 200-yard freestyle with first and third place finishes, respectively. Staretz narrowly edged out Fordham’s Ainhoa Martin by 0.26 seconds.

Bishop also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle. Staretz placed second in the 100-yard butterfly.

The women continued to occupy the winner’s podium in the 100-yard backstroke as freshman Aura Vilarrasa and sophomore Shamiya Guirre placed second and third.

Sophomore Bree Anderson placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:46.80 while freshman Lia Vendel finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.46.

Bishop and Vilarrasa also finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle.

For the men, freshman Ruben Van Gool came out on top in the 1000-yard freestyle by 17 seconds with a time of 9:51.26. Van Gool also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle by under a second.

Fellow freshman Ranger Gavino placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.82.

Gavino then backed up his third-place finish with a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. The freshman staved off three Rams to come out on top with a time of 2:08.23.

Both the men’s and women’s program had second place finishers in the 200-yard butterfly. On the men’s side, sophomore Matt Dingess came in second place by 1.14 seconds, while senior Raquel Rubalcava Reyes missed first by 2.49 seconds.

In the final events for both programs, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the women captured first place in both the A and B relays. The men came in second place in both relays.

The Seahawks will return to action on Friday, February 5 when they host LIU at the Spiro Sports Center.

BRONX, NY – St. Francis Brooklyn women’s swimming and diving faced Fordham Wednesday afternoon in the team’s final tune-up before NEC Championships later this month. The Terriers dropped its matchup, falling to the Rams 206-77.

The team’s effort was led by Mariajose Lopez, who took first in the 1000-yard freestyle in the first individual event of the meet. The senior won by a whopping 16.67 seconds, defeating two Wagner swimmers and a Fordham swimmer.

Lopez added a fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.86) and helped guide the 200-yard freestyle relay (along with Boel BergquistKristy Nagtzaam and Raquel Torrez) to a third-place result.

Sophomore Elayna Pistrin followed suit with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke. She won by over 3.5 seconds, dominating a strong field (2:27.05). She also finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM.

Bergquist took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.17) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.35) to continue her strong rookie campaign.

Nagtzaam added a fifth-place result in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.93).

The Terriers will now prepare for NEC Championships, which will be from February 21-25.

BRONX, NY – St. Francis Brooklyn men’s swimming and diving battled Fordham Wednesday evening, concluding the regular season before NEC Championships later in February. The Terriers fell to the hosts 176-107.

Three individual victories helped fuel the team, as Toni DragojaRobin Tatar and Robert Wagner had wins.

Dragoja shined, winning the 200-yard freestyle by nearly four seconds (1:42.45). The freshman took second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.78) and also helped the 200-yard freestyle medley relay team to a win (along with Valentin SchnermannKamil Goleniec and Daniel Matheus Santos.

Fresh off an NEC Rookie of the Week honor, Tatar continued his strong form, winning the 200-yard butterfly. His time of 1:58.53 won the event by over a second. It was his second consecutive win in that event. Tatar added a fourth-place result in the 100-yard butterfly (53.15).

Wagner did well in two backstroke events, winning the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.33) and finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke (53.54).

Schnermann turned in a solid day, finishing third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.75), finishing just behind Dragoja and one Fordham swimmer. He also took fourth in the 200-yard IM, posting a time of 2:00.91.

Matheus Santos had a pair of third-place finishes, having positive results in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard freestyle. He completed the backstroke event in 55.29 seconds and the freestyle event in 47.57 seconds.

Matthew Bernstein took second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dive. The senior was just over two points shy of taking first in the 1-meter dive, finishing with a score of 197.45. He had a score of 190.67 in the 3-meter event.

Vladimer Petras added a favorable finish in the 100-yard butterfly, taking fifth with a time of 53.22 seconds.

The Terriers will now prepare for NEC Championships, which will be from February 21-25.
