Fordham Opens Season With Sweep of Manhattan

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 13, 2023) – The Fordham swimming & diving team opened its 2023-24 season on Friday evening, as the Rams swept their dual meet against Manhattan College at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.

The Fordham men posted a 163-58 victory over the Jaspers, while the women toppled Manhattan, 163-65.  Fordham won every event on Friday with five Rams capturing the top spot in multiple events.

On the women’s side, Emma Shaughnessy won both breaststroke events in 29.06 seconds (50) and 1:04.39 (100), while Jessica Zebrowski took home both butterfly events in 25.47 seconds (50) and 56.59 seconds (100).  Leire Martin also grabbed first in two events, placing first in the 100 backstroke (56.87) and 200 individual medley (2:06.27).

Other winners on Friday included Ainhoa Martin (200 freestyle – 1:55.58), Jane Brown (50 backstroke – 26.58), Alica Angelone Lopez (50 freestyle – 27.13), Mya Bokerman (1M – 255.30), Therese Enriquez (100 freestyle – 55.08), Emilie Krog (500 freestyle – 5:10.61), and Mya Sharkey (3M – 270.75).

In the women’s relays, the 200 medley relay team of J. Brown, Shaughnessy, Manon Compagner, and Alison Lin took first in 1:45.21, while the 200 freestyle relay of Compagner, Mia Galat, J. Brown, and Zebrowski had the top time of 1:38.39.

For the men, Wojciech Dutkowiak and Marco Petit earned multiple event wins for the Rams.  Dutkowiak grabbed first in the 100 (46.57) and 200 (1:41.86) freestyle events, with Petit capturing first in both diving events (1M – 224.55; 3M – 224.25).

Nine other Rams earned gold in an event on Friday, starting with Jesse Abramson in the 50 backstroke (26.17) and Kevin Zahariev in the 50 breaststroke (26.93).  Guy Gropper (100 butterfly – 50.09) and Alexander Shah (50 freestyle – 21.55) were the next two winners with Christian Taylor (100 backstroke – 51.36), David Topi (100 breaststroke – 58.25), Juan Abella (500 freestyle – 4:52.22), Len Ray (50 butterfly – 24.21), and Daniel Langlois (200 IM – 2:00.06) following suit.

The men’s relays saw the 200 medley relay of Taylor, Noah Althoff, Gropper, and Shah take first in 1:33.52, while the 200 freestyle relay of Taylor, Althoff, Shah, and Gropper won in 1:24.77.

Fordham will next be in action on Thursday, October 19th, when the Rams host Marist for a 5:00 PM meet at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.
