Former Auburn Assistant Francisco Rego Joins Georgia Tech Coach Staff

Georgia Tech head swimming coach Courtney Shealy Hart announced the addition of Francisco Rego to the Yellow Jackets’ coaching staff as an assistnat coach. Rego joins Georgia tech after spending 2 years as the head coach of Team Greenville Swim Club in Greenville, SC. During his tenure at Team Greenville, Rego led the team to both its first short course and long course South Carolina state title in 14 years.

Rego also has NCAA coaching experience, having coached in the SEC for Auburn. While Rego was at Auburn, he coached Kevin Cordes, Marcelo Chierighini, and Felipe Lima. Rego, a Brazilian native, started his coaching career in Brazil, where he coached at several clubs.

Rego’s statement on his new position reads as follows: “First, I want to thank Courtney and the entire coaching staff for the process and for welcoming me to Georgia Tech. I’m incredibly excited to be joining a place like the Institute, where both the academics and athletics operate at an elite level. I’m ready to hit the ground running and get working with one of the fastest-growing programs in the country.”

  • Five ESSZ Age Group Sectionals Medals
  • 2018 South Carolina LCM State Champion with Team Greenville (First time in 14 years)
  • 2019 South Carolina SCY State Champion with Team Greenville (First time in 15 years)
  • 36 South Carolina State Championship Medals
  • Three Rio de Janeiro State Records
  • 60 Rio de Janeiro State Championship Medals
  • 2019 South Carolina Zones Team Head Coach (Highest finish in history – fourth)

Was he the auburn volunteer coach or on paid staff? Name is not familiar. Why didn’t he get picked up at VT?

He was a GA while getting his masters and then worked as a volunteer assistant. Great guy, great coach!

Thanks! I didn’t think D1 programs were allowed GAs except for diving (safety reasons).
