Forrester Breaks Another Butterfly Record on Final Day Prelims at 2013 Ivy League Championships

Anne Lepesant contributed this report on the final day of prelims at the 2013 Ivy League Championships.

The final day of the 2013 Ivy League Championships was a short one, headlined by the preparation for a great 100 freestyle battle.

There, Princeton’s Lisa Boyce took the top seed in 48.95, ahead of Harvard’s Sara Li in 49.31. That’s the champion of the 50 against the champion of the 200 in this final, though Boyce had a more significant morning drop.

Other top seeds went to Princeton freshman Sada Stewart in the 200 back in 1:57.16. Boyce won the 100, but obviously isn’t attempting this double tonight, which leaves three freshman as the top three seeds, all in 1:57’s. Aside from Stewart, that’s Dartmouth’s Kendese Nangle and Harvard’s Kendall Crawford.

Katie Meili, maybe a bit surprisingly, isn’t nearly as good of a 200 breaststroker as she is a 100 breaststroker. That’s surprising, given how good she is in the 200 IM. She is still comfortably the top seed in this event after a 2:11.39 that broke an Andrea Kropp Pool Record. Brown’s Briana Borgolini is the 2nd seed in 2:14.88.

And finally, the only league record of the morning, Yale’s Alexandra Forrester swam a 1:54.60 to take the top seed in the 200 fly by five seconds. After breaking the Ivy mark in the 100 on Friday, she now cut a second off of her 2010 Meet Record, and also broke the overall Ivy League Record held by the great Alicia Aemisegger from that same season.

Up/Downs & Standings

Princeton heads into the final day of competition with a narrow lead over Harvard. Though from what we’ve seen so far, Princeton would seem to have the edge in finals, don’t forget that there’s still the mile to be swum, where Harvard is just a little better. Princeton, though, probably has the edge on the 3-meter to counteract that.

Simply put: Harvard needs to swim very well tonight, and then get some help from teams like Brown and Yale who also have a lot of A-finalists to keep Princeton’s as low A-finalists.
