In their very last event of 2016 Speedo Junior Nationals in Minneapolis, Fort Collins Area Swim Team rocked a 4:08.39 to win the women’s 4×100 medley relay. In so doing they broke both the meet record and the girls 15-16 national age group record.
With a team that consisted of Bayley Stewart (16), Zoe Bartel (15), Coleen Gillilan (15), and Kylee Alons (16), Fort Collins swam 4:08.39, taking 28/100 off a Speedo Junior Nationals meet record of 4:08.67 that had been set by Aquajets Swim Team in 2009. The Fort Collins quartet also took a huge, 3-second chunk out of the 4:11.39 NAG record for 15-16 girls. That mark also belonged to Aquajets, but dated from Speedo Juniors in August of 2013.
Below are the comparative splits
FAST-CO | 8/12/2016 | AQJT-MN | 8/14/2009 | AQJT-MN | 8/9/2013 |
Bayley Stewart | 1:02.86 | Rachel Bootsma | 59.77 | Zoe Avestruz | 1:02.86 |
Zoe Bartel | 1:08.61 | Abigail Duncan | 1:10.89 | Olivia Anderson | 1:09.36 |
Coleen Gillilan | 1:00.24 | Meghan Cummings | 1:01.29 | Bre Thorne | 1:02.58 |
Kylee Alons | 56.68 | Tess Behrens | 56.72 | Kaia Grobe | 56.59 |
4:08.39 | 4:08.67 | 4:11.39 |
While all four of the teammates swam outstanding splits, it’s worth pointing out that Alons went 1.7 seconds faster than her previous best in the 100 free, which she achieved leading of FAST’s 400 free relay here at Speedo Juniors. Prior to this week her best 100 free was 59.07 from a flat start.
The Fort Collins girls were runners-up in team points at 2016 Speedo Juniors, and combined with the boys for third place in the combined team standings.
How old was Bootsma in 2009? 15? Wow.
Does this also break the 15 to 18 record?
