A handful of swimmers from the ACC Championships hung around in Atlanta on Sunday to swim in a Long Course Olympic Trials Qualifier event, a one-day mini-meet designed to give swimmers the opportunity to take advantage of their conference tapers to earn some Olympic Trials cut.
They were joined by a group of athletes from the CCSA, and specifically the conference champions their from Florida Gulf Coast, as they returned to the Atlanta airport from their meet in nearby Athens, Georgia.
A handful of swimmers were successful in achieving their first Olympic Trials cuts, included among them:
- Virginia Tech’s Mackenzie Stewart, who swam a 1:11.28 in the 100 breaststroke for 2nd place. Pitt’s Kinga Cichowska, a Polish national, won that race in 1:10.70.
- Pitt’s Blair Wegescheide, who is really an impressive athlete in that she swims and dives for Pitt, achieved her Olympic Trials cut in the 100 backstroke with a 1:03.01. Kira Toussaint of FGCU, who is Dutch, placed 1st in 1:02.50.
- Jessica Hespeler of Virginia Tech already has an Olympic Trials cut in the 200 free, but added one in the 400 on Sunday with a 4:17.18.
- Duke’s Maddie Rusch swam a 26.19 in the 50 free, to match the Olympic Trials cut to the hundredth-of-a-second.
