Four Days Later, Kyle Chalmers Re-Smashes 100 SCM Free WJR in Tokyo

2016 FINA WORLD CUP – TOKYO

Kyle Chalmers‘ golden Olympic summer has given way to continued success in the short course meters pool on the FINA World Cup Tour this fall.

After setting the World Junior Record in the 100 SCM free just last weekend at the Singapore stop of the tour, Chalmers blew past that mark with a new WJR tonight in Tokyo, posting a 46.12 to also take the event win.

The back-half of Chalmers’ races were nearly identical– it was a quicker sprint on the first 50 where the Australian teenager made the difference as compared to last weekend.

After winning the Olympic gold medal in this event this summer, in addition to his swims the last several days, Chalmers has been on a tear this year. While he lost a 100 free battle to Russian sprint stalwart Vladimir Morozov in Singapore last weekend, he was victorious tonight. Morozov was out quicker, a hair under 22 (21.94), but Chalmers reeled him in and edged him at the wall. Finishing 2nd in 46.15 was the Russian, just .03 behind Chalmers.

Chalmers is actually the first World Junior Record holder in the 100 SCM free. In Singapore, he bettered the 47.20 “world best time” benchmark set by FINA when they announced the addition of World Junior Records in short course meters.
