This weekend Ohio high school athletes have been competing at the State Championships in Canton, Ohio. Ohio is divided into two division in both genders based on school population. Division II prelims were Thursday night, with Division one Friday morning.
A few new State Records were established in prelims. Finals were held for Division II Friday night, with Division I Saturday night. Both Division finals will be combined for a future recap.
Division II Prelims –
Hannah Stevens of Lexington High School, set a new 100 backstroke State Record in prelims with a time of 53.87. Stevens was the State Champion in 2013 with a winning time of 54.80.
Dayton Oakwood’s Brock Turner set a new state record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:26.26. He was well ahead of his 2013 winning time of 4:28.93 in prelims this year. Dayton Oakwood has a strong team that will look to take home the team title as well.
Division I Prelims –
Cincinnati Ursuline Academy had a record from Emily Slabe. She set a new mark in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.35. She is seeded well in front of the field, with over a second between her and the next finisher.
Ursuline’s 200 freestyle relay team of Julia Moran, Rollie Grinder, Temarie Tomley and Alisabeth Marsteller set a new state record of 1:34.02. The team had two impressive splits, a 22.57 for Tomley and 22.96 from Marsteller.

Hannah Stevens actual broke her 2013 – 100 back state record (54.73) at the Northwest Ohio District Swimming and Diving D2 meet with a time of 53.73 on 2/14/2014. The 2013 Northwest Ohio District Swimming D2 record of 56.73 set by Hannah in 2013.
Hannah went on to defend her 2013 state titles in both the 100 free (prelim – 49.73 / final – 50.06) and in the 100 back (prelim – 53.87 (state record) / final – 54.00).
Hannah was also named 2014 Girls Swimmer of the meet. She was also named 2013 Girls Swimmer of the last year too.
A great way to end a high school career! Very very proud Dad!
