The lofty French standards for the Olympics resulted in a team of only 29 headed to London, but a more-lenient 41 will be headed to the European Championships in Debreczen, Hungary in May.
The full roster is below, and includes a diverse roster from around the country, though with the biggest group representing the elite team at Marseille, with 9 swimmers (though, that includes Fred Bousquet and Laure Manaudou, who train in the United States at Auburn).
Speaking of Bousquet, he has held up the promises of his significant-other and continued his career despite missing the Olympic Team. He will swim at the European Championships in the 50 fly.
American Eric Ress skipped the NCAA season to focus on trying to qualify for the Olympics, and though he came up short there, he will swim in Hungary. Individual events have not been released, but this could be one of the last major championships at which we’ll see Hugues Duboscq will swim an individual event (if at all) – for the Olympics, he qualified only as a relay alternate, and after this medal-contending team missed the final at the World Championships last year, there’s a chance they won’t risk it again in 2012.
Olympic Nice Natation has really built itself into a French powerhouse, with 5 on the roster. Aside from Yannick Agnel and Camille Muffat, who were truly the two stars of the meet, they’ll also send swimmers like Clement Lefert, Charlotte Bonnet, and Anna Santamans. This training group was long an impressive one in the junior ranks, but now those swimmers are hitting the senior ranks (though, Bonnet is still only 16) and they now make up a huge portion of this French team.
France will have one of the largest (maybe the largest) at the Championships. Germany is taking 32, while Great Britain will send only 5.
