TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The 2020 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships got underway on Thursday at the Vigo Country Aquatic Center in Terre Haute, Ind.
Thursday’s events began at 10 a.m. with preliminary’s held in the morning session. In the finals on Thursday evening, winners were crowned in the men’s and women’s 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 400 medley relay and the three-meter diving competition.
Following the first day of competition, Franklin College leads the charge in both the men’s and women’s race, with the women boasting a score of 265.5 and the men sitting atop the leaderboard with a score of 214.
On the women’s side, Franklin got things started, picking up a win in the 200 freestyle relay, with the team of Courtnee Coffman, Ashley Snoke, Jacqueline Richard and Brynna Sentel touching in a time of 1:35.26 to take first. Sentel added her second first-place of the night, posting a swim of 4:55.54 in the 500 freestyle to take the event.
Franklin again captured the top slot in the 200 IM, with Caileigh McCafferty touching in a time of 2:08.66 to place first. Coffman notched her second first place swim of the evening in the 50 freestyle, with her time of 23.59 earning first. In the final event of the night for the women, the 400 medley relay, Franklin took first, with Sentel, Snoke, McCafferty and Coffman earning their second relay win of the evening with a swim of 3:53.79.
On the men’s side, Rose-Hulman got off to a strong start winning the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Dutch Kipp, Zachary Tate, Ryan Nikolic and Jared Brown swam a time of 1:23.64 for the first-place finish. In the 500 freestyle, Rose-Hulman continued to shine, with Brendan King finishing first with a swim of 4:39.34.
In the 200 IM, Franklin’s Charlie Hall finished first, with a time of 1:52.99 earning him the top spot. In the 50 freestyle, Brown of Rose-Hulman picked up his second first place finish, with a swim of 20:57 good enough to reach the top of the podium. In the final event of the night for the men, Franklin placed first in the 400 medley relay, with Zach Rayce, Jack Heim, Shane O’Sullivan and Ben Doss swimming a time of 3:25.65.
On the boards, both the men and women competed in the three-meter event. Faith Jackson from Franklin took the women’s title with a score of 357.50. Fellow Grizzly diver Gauge Creech took first in the men’s event, with a score of 490.05 easily earning first place.
