TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The 2022 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships wrapped up on Sunday, with Franklin College claiming the women’s title and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology taking the men’s.
Rose-Hulman captured the men’s title with a score of 867, narrowly beating out Franklin College, who earned 810 points. Transylvania University finished third with 477, Anderson University placed fourth with 262 while Manchester University was fifth with 136 points and Hanover College placed sixth with 109 points.
On the women’s side, Franklin took the title with a dominating 1,011 points. Transylvania finished second with 516.50 points, while Rose-Hulman took third with 440. Anderson finished in fourth with 414.50, with newcomers Bluffton University making a splash, finishing fifth with 130 points. Manchester (128) and Hanover (61) rounded out the scoring, finishing in sixth and seventh respectively.
In the first event of the evening, Erin Perkins came up big in the 1650 Yard Freestyle, with a swim of 18:41.05 to win the event for Franklin. Fellow Grizzly Caileigh McCafferty won the 200 Yard Backstroke, touching in a time of 2:06.96. Emme Egan won the 100 Yard Freestyle, with a swim of 52.19 for Franklin.
Becky Pfeifer swam to a win in the 200 Yard Breaststroke, with her time of 2:27.99 besting the competition. Samantha Phillips snagged a win in the 200 Yard Butterfly, touching in a time of 2:08.53.
In the final event for the women, Franklin continued its dominance, taking the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay behind swims from Egan, Phillips, Alayna Kenworthy and McCafferty with a time of 3:32.34.
For the men, the first event of the night went to Rose-Hulman’s Evan Sellers, who swam a time of 16:07.32 in the 1650 Yard Freestyle. In the 200 Yard Backstroke Franklin’s Jack Burke won the event with a time of 1:52.31. Transylvania’s JJ Holmes won the 100 Yard Freestyle, touching in a time of 44.79.
Paul Klaeren turned in a time of 2:03.86 in the 200 Yard Breaststroke to claim the event for Franklin. In the 200 Yard Butterfly, Kosmo Wojack claimed the top spot, with his swim of 1:50.97 besting the competition for Franklin.
On the boards, Gague Creech from Franklin secured the win in the 1 meter dive, with a score of 502.95.
It came down to the final event to declare a winner for the men, with the 400 Yard Freestyle relay team of Vineet Ranade, Ryan Nikolic, Nick Edwards and Jareed Brown securing the victory with a time of 3:02.74.
The marquee award winners were honored at the close of the meet, with Franklin’s Phillips named the 2022 HCAC Women’s Swimmer of the Meet and Holmes earning the title of 2022 HCAC Men’s Swimmer of the Meet.
On the boards Franklin’s dynamic duo claimed the awards, with Faith Jackson stepping up to take the women’s title and Gague Creech claiming his third straight title, named the 2022 HCAC Diver of the Meet.
Another pair of first-years to earn honors were the Newcomer of the Year. From Franklin Emme Egan took the honor of 2022 HCAC Women’s Newcomer of the Year. Representing Rose-Hulman, Vineet Ranade was named the 2022 HCAC Men’s Newcomer of the Year.
Finally, the coach of the year was honored. Andrew Hendricks from Franklin was named the both the men’s and women’s 2022 HCAC Coach of the Year.
