Freestyle Specialist Maeve English Commits to Sacred Heart University for 2023

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Opting to stay in the Northeast to continue her swimming career, Bridgewater, New Jersey’s Maeve English announced her decision to swim at Sacred Heart University this fall. English is currently in the midst of her senior year at Immaculata High School while swimming club with the Greater Somerset County YMCA.

Representing her club team, English qualified for the 2022 YMCA Long Course Nationals in both the 100 and 200 freestyles last summer. Her top finish at the meet came in the 200 free where she finished 56th in 2:15.07.

In short course racing, English posted multiple lifetime bests at a meet last December. After taking third in the individual 100 free (54.95), she led off her team’s 400 free relay in a lifetime best 54.53. She also added an individual title in the 200 free, touching with the fastest time of 1:57.41.

  • 500 free – 5:15.10

Last season, the Sacred Heart women finished in 6th at the 2023 Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The team was led in points by senior Kelly Bartnett, who finished in the A-final of the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles. She narrowly missed the podium twice, taking fourth in both the 100 and 200.

English’s arrival will help fill the gap in the freestyle events left by Bartnett’s graduation. With her lifetime bests, she would have narrowly missed scoring in the B-final of both the 100 and 200 and would have been just four seconds off of the B-final in the 500. Her time in the 500 would have also been the second fastest on the team last season.

She should also have an immediate impact on the program’s relays. She would have ranked in the top-4 on the roster last season in the 200 free and would have been the team’s 6th fastest 100 freestyler.

When English arrives in Fairfield, Connecticut this fall, the Northeast Conference will already have seen a major change. Earlier this year, St. Francis (Brooklyn) announced that it would eliminate all athletic programs beginning at the end of the 2023 spring semester. While the women’s team finished 7th at the meet, they had multiple women finish in the top-8 across the meet.
