Freshmen Help Lead Stanford to Victories Over Harvard and Pacific

The Stanford men hosted Harvard and the University of the Pacific on Friday, January 16th. None of the teams suited up. Diving took place on Wednesday, January 14th only between Harvard and Stanford.

Overall, Stanford won nine out of the 14 swimming events. Stanford defeated Harvard 162-127 and the University of the Pacific 166-33. The team swept both the 200 breaststroke and the 400 IM. Senior Grant Shoults kicked off the individual part of the meet with a win in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:03.21. Later in the meet he also won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:23.78. 

The freshman at Stanford made a huge impact as they won five individual events. Ron Polonsky won both the 100 breaststroke (54.29) and the 400 IM (3:50.36). Andrei Minakov won the 50 freestyle (19.56) and the 100 butterfly (46.33). Aaron Sequeira was also victorious as he won the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:45.37.

Harvard defeated the University of the Pacific 186-30. The team was led by senior Dean Farris who captured individual wins in the 200 freestyle (1:35.57) and in the 100 freestyle (43.32). He also used his walls to help capture wins, leading off in a 21.77 in the 200 medley relay (1:26.28) and anchoring the 200 freestyle relay (1:18.73) in a time of 18.93. He was the only swimmer to have a sub-19 second split as the second fastest split was a 19.61. Senior Jacob Johnson also got an individual win for the Crimson as he won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:46.61.

Diving was split between Harvard and Stanford as Stanford senior Conor Casey won the 1 meter (396.70) and Harvard freshman Adam Wesson won the 3 meter (375.53). 

The University of the Pacific only sent 15 out of their 21 members of their roster. Pacific had their highest individual finish as sixth by sophomore Jonathan Tan in the 200 butterfly (1:57.96). They also had five seventh place finishes, including four among their sophomores.

The Stanford men will be back in action on Friday, January 21st at home against Arizona State. The Harvard men have their next meet Tuesday, January 18th at home against Brown. The University of the Pacific has their next meet scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd at home against UCSB.

I can’t believe that I’m the first person to ever say this to you: but if you expect the public at large to feel sympathy for those poor, sad, tragically-cursed Stanford students, you’re going to be looking for a long time.
