Freshmen impressive as Iowa State tops South Dakota at home

The Iowa State Cyclones nabbed a win over South Dakota Friday night, getting a double from distance star Karyl Clarete and also wringing big production out of its freshman class.

Clarete, already the school record-holder in the 500, 1000 and 1650 after a breakout freshman year, jumped down in distance to win the 200 and 100 frees for Iowa State. Her 200 time was 1:51.91, and in the 100 she went 53.47.

The freshman class also came up big for ISU. Kasey Roberts won twice, narrowly beating teammate Kaylee Kucera in the 100 back 58.43 to 58.64, then winning the 200 breast in 2:24.67. Also winning for the freshman class was Mary Kate Luddy in the 500 free (5:09.41).

Kucera, second in that 100 back, came back to win the 100 fly later on in 58.83.

Seniors Samantha Fossum (1000 free, 10:45.72), Amanda Paulson (50 free, 24.16), Bre Loeschke (200 IM, 2:09.75) and Ali Stearns (100 back, 1:06.04) also won events for the Cyclones.

South Dakota’s lone win came in 3-meter diving, where star sophomore Greysen Hertting scored 293.65 points to take the event.

The Coyotes also got a pair of second place finishes from sophomore Sam Schuttinger (200 free and 200 back).

Iowa State won both relays. The medley really pulled ahead of the field on Paulson’s 25.1 butterfly split to go 1:47.28, while the 400 free relay went 3:32.40 on Clarete’s 52.7.

Other winners, all for Iowa State, were Shahar Silberman in the 200 fly (2:09.79), Brooke Evensen in the 200 back (2:08.68) and Elyse Brouillette in 1-meter diving (285.95).
