Futures Qualifier Fia McCarty Sends Verbal to Boston University for 2021

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Fia McCarty of Oakwood, OH has announced her decision to swim for Boston University’s class of 2025. The breaststroke specialist is beginning her final year at Oakwood High School and she swims year-round for the Dayton Raiders.

“I am incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career swimming at Boston University! I want to thank my coaches, my friends, my family and especially my mom for helping me through this process! Go Terriers!”

Last summer, McCarty competed at the 2019 USA Swimming Futures Championships in Geneva, OH. She swam the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 IM, placing 30th, 28th, and 50th, respectively. She decided to swim the 100 breast in a time trial event, ultimately swimming 1.3 seconds slower than she had in her individual race.

At the 2020 Ohio OB SW District Meet, the Oakwood High School junior swam the 100 breast and the 200 IM. Her 100 breast time of 1:05.57 earned her the 5th place spot, while her 200 IM time of 2:10.47 earned her a bronze medal and a personal best time. She swam the breaststroke leg of Oakwood’s 200 medley relay and she anchored their 400 free relay.

In late February, she swam the 100 breast and 200 IM at the Ohio State Championships. She touching 13th in the 200 IM (2:13.12) and 14th in the 100 breast (1:06.15), clinching a spot in the B-final. She dropped 0.23 seconds in finals, moving up two spots to touch 12th.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 breast – 31.10
  • 100 breast – 1:05.42
  • 200 breast – 2:22.07
  • 200 IM – 2:10.47

McCarty’s top breaststroke times would have made her a point-scorer for the Terriers at the 2020 Patriot League Championships. She would have earned a spot in the B-final in both the 100 and the 200 breast. Her 100 breast time would have made her Boston University’s second-fastest swimmer behind Carlyn Soares, and her 200 breast would have made her the third-fastest behind Soares and Meghan Egan. Soares broke her own school record in the 200 breast in November of 2019.

McCarty will be joining Illinois sprinter Summer Brainin as a member of Boston University’s class of 2025.
