Futures Qualifier Isabella Barrientos Sends Verbal to Washington University

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Washington University in St. Louis has picked up Isabella Barrientos of The Woodlands, TX for its class of 2025. She swims year-round for the Magnolia Aquatic Club’s National Group under the direction of Head Coach Terry Jones and National Team Coach Clayton Cagle. She is in her final year at The Woodlands High School, where she swims under the guidance of Coach Jeremy Wade.

While sticking with the red and green, I am blessed and honored to announce that I will be continuing my academic and swimming career at Washington University in St. Louis! 💚❤️ I want to thank my parents, coaches, and teammates for their continuous support in my journey. I am so excited to see what the next 4 years bring! GO BEARS!! 🐻 #washu25

In August of 2019, Barrientos competed at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in Des Moines. She swam the 200 and 400 free and the 200 back. She also chose to time trial the 100 back. She finished 52nd in the 200 back, 48th in the 100 free, and 25th in the 400 free, picking up a new personal best time in the event.

Last February, she swam at the Texas 6A Region 04 Championships. The Woodlands High School sophomore swam the 500 free and the 100 back, and she was a member of 2 of her school’s relays. She made it back in the A-final of both of her individual events, touching fourth in each. In finals, Barrientos remained 4th in the 100 back, clocking in at 57.96, and she touched second in the 500 free. She went 3.6 seconds faster than she had gone in prelims, powering to the wall in a personal best time of 5:00.80. Her teammate Abigail Pope won gold.

Barrientos swam the backstroke leg of her team’s 200 medley relay in finals. She led of the relay in a personal best 50 back time of 26.47. She was followed by Alyssa Sorensen on breast, Lillian Nordmann on fly, and Megan Gallagher on free. The woman took home the gold medal in the event. Barrientos also anchored The Woodlands’ 400 free relay in prelims, where they finished first. The Woodlands dominated the championship meet, finishing 285 points ahead of Klein High School.

Barrientos’ 500 free time at the regional meet earned her a spot at the Texas 6A State Championships where she finished 17th in prelims.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 back – 26.47
  • 100 back – 57.12
  • 200 back – 2:02.97
  • 200 free – 1:53.87
  • 500 free – 5:00.12

Barrientos will join the Washington University Bears in the fall of 2021. Her times will likely make her one of the team’s top swimmers. Her 500 free time would have been the team’s fastest during the 2019-2020 season by 3.7 seconds. She would have been their third-fastest 100 and 200 backstroker and their fifth-fastest 200 freestyler.

Additionally, she would have scored points for Washington University at the 2020 University Athletic Association Championships. She would have earned a spot in the A-final for the 500 free and the 200 back and she would have made it back in the B-final of the 100 back and 200 free.

Ms Barrientos posted PB’s at Regions on the 200 Fr 1:52.21 and 100 Bk 57.07 and a lot of her teammates had a very strong showing at Regions. She is part of the Woodlands HS, which is definitely a swimming powerhouse in the Gulf area of Tx. This year the Tx HS state meet will be held at San Antonio, it should be a fun meet to watch. The perennial contenders would be The Woodlands High School, South Lake Carroll HS (defending Champs) and Kingwood HS, all these teams should be on the hunt for the championship. Good luck to all!
