One year after nabbing Rio bronze behind his gold-medal teammate Gregorio Paltrinieri in the 2016 Olympics in the 1500, it is Gabriele Detti‘s time to shine. Detti set a European and Italian record tonight in Budapest to win the 800 free in 7:40.77. It is the 22-year-old swimmer’s first world title.
The 800 free (now an Olympic event) is the perfect distance for Detti, splitting the difference between his Rio bronzes in the 400 free and 1500 free. Detti’s 7:40.77 tonight was .04 faster than his teammate Paltrinieri’s Italian and European record mark from 2015 in Kazan.
Detti’s performance tonight was also the 9th-fastest swim in history, bumping him ahead of Paltrinieri to become the 8th-fastest swimmer in the history of the event.
Paltrinieri, meanwhile, finished third in 7:42.44, giving the Italians the 1-3 spots on the podium. Wojciech Wjodak of Poland won the silver in 7:41.73

The “courageous” Sun Yang broke down in tears in an post-race video, saying his muscles couldn’t function during the race, and that he wasn’t able to race to 100% of his ability (yeah, RIGHT). The media patted him on the back, saying his effort was courageous, and that he doesn’t need to swim the 1500 in order prove himself. I predict a “heart murmur” prior to the 1500 and a no-show prior to the race…
