Gaucho Men, Aztec Women Top A3 Performance Invitational

The San Diego State women and the UCSB men maintained their leads established on Day 1 for overall wins after Day 2 finals of the A3 Performance Invitational at East Los Angeles College, while the Trojan men and women took home both a meet and pool record in the final relays of the night.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay 

The Aztec women’s A team snatched the top spot with a 1:40.26, just ahead of UCLA’s A team (1:41.01) and the Gaucho women’s A team (1:42.42). Aztec Summer Harrison‘s blazing 24.08 50 Fly split pushed the Aztecs to a close win over the Bruins.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay

UCSD’s A team took home the win on the men’s side with a 1:30.09 and a Division 2 NCAA B cut in the process. The Gaucho men followed up just behind for second with a 1:30.48, and Cal State Bakersfield’s A team touched third with a 1:30.74.

Women’s 400 IM

In the championship final, Gaucho Alanis Heren touched first in the field, easily snatching a Division 1 NCAA B cut with a 4:15.46. UCLA’s Arlyn Upshaw followed up for second in 4:20.37, and University of San Diego’s Keenan Lineback was third in 4:22.52.

Men’s 400 IM

Cal Poly’s Paolo Stanchi cruised to an NCAA B Cut in the men’s event with a 3:52.79 ahead of UCSB’s Dylan Kubick (3:54.05), who also claimed an NCAA B-worthy time. California Baptist University’s Joshua Hanson touched third in an NCAA Division II B cut of  3:55.96.

Women’s 100 Fly

The Gaucho’s continued their event winning streak with a first-place finish from Andrea Ward (53.20), which was also a solid Division I NCAA B cut. She touched just ahead of UCLA’s Katie Grover (53.69), another B cut qualifier, who was followed close behind by San Diego State’s Summer Harrison (53.87), who also grabbed an NCAA B cut. Hawaii’s Erin Mcnulty was fourth with yet another NCAA B cut of 54.35.

Men’s 100 Fly

UCSB kept the ball rolling with a 1-2 finish in the men’s event, as Wade Allen (47.06) and teammate Yoessef Tibazi (47.90) took first and second while both claiming NCAA B cuts. Cal State Bakersfield’s Mihael Vukic touched third under the Division II NCAA B standard (49.01).

Women’s 200 Free

Hawaii’s Jasmine Alkhaldi claimed first for the Rainbow Warriors and took home an NCAA B cut (1:46.93) ahead of a pair of San Diego State swimmers. Aztecs Natilee Ruiz (1:47.58) and Savannah Miller (1:48.35) both took home Division I NCAA B Cuts as well.

Men’s 200 Free

Cal State Bakersfield’s Mitchell Huxold brought home a first-place finish for the Roadrunners (1:38.00), ahead of Gaucho Clayton Young (1:39.57). Cal Poly Mustang Jack Jenner followed up for third in 1:40.55.

Women’s 100 Breast

Bruin Alison Wine brought home a win for UCLA under the NCAA B standard, touching in 1:01.14. California Baptist University’s Alena Rumiantceva touched second in 1:02.67, just two one-hundredths of a second ahead of UCSB Gaucho Katie Records (1:02.69).

Men’s 100 Breast

The top three finishers all swam under the Division I NCAA B cut, with Cal Poly Mustang Jimmy Deiparine leading the pack in 53.71. California Baptist University’s Nikolay Klepikov followed up for second just one tenth of a second behind in 53.88, and Gaucho Andres Castilleja touched third in 54.94.

Women’s 100 Back 

Aztec Anika Apostalon led the field with a quick NCAA B-worth swim of 52.10, with the next two finishers touching in B cuts as well. California Baptist University’s Mary Hanson claimed second in 53.59, just ahead of UCLA’s Madison White (53.85).

Men’s 100 Back

The six fastest men all swam 50. 100 Backs, proving it was indeed a tight race. First to the wall was Gaucho Billy Mullis with a 50.03, just ahead of UCSD’s Julian Jacobs, who swam a Division NCAA B cut of 50.26. Mullis‘ teammate, USCB’s Joshua Smith touched third in 50.38, ahead of Cal Poly Mustang Zach Cootes (50.72). Just one one-hundredth of a second behind Cootes was UCSB’s Albert Miao (50.73), and UCSD’s Chandler Pourvahidi took sixth in 50.85.

Women’s 800 Free Relay

While the Trojans did not have any swimmers in individual events, they demonstrated their power with a pool record of 7:11.63 in the women’s relay, almost ten seconds ahead of the rest of the field. UCLA’s A team touched second in 7:21.66, while San Diego State’s A team followed up for third in 7:23.97.

Men’s 800 Free Relay

The Trojans swam to a meet record of 6:27.00 in the men’s event, again ten seconds ahead of the pool, with lead leg Dylan Carter swimming the fastest split in 1:34.19. UCSB’s A team was second in 6:37.09, while Cal State Bakersfield took third in 6:41.39.
