George Mason Combines For 24 Wins In Sweep of Old Dominion

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams swept Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.  The women’s team earned a 173-102 win, while the men’s team posted a 175.5-113.5 victory.

On the women’s side, Mason won 13 events against the Monarchs.

The Patriots took the top two spots in the 100-yard backstroke, with freshman Ali Tyler winning the event (55.87), while classmate Anna Whelan placed second (57.08).  Whelan won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.56).

Tyler also won the 50-yard freestyle (23.43), with freshman Shannon Judge less than a second back in second place (24.41).

The Patriots went one-two in the 200-yard freestyle, with senior Laura Hodge first (1:53.87) and freshman Emma DeJong second (1:53.99).  DeJong took the top spot on the podium in the 100-yard freestyle (52.48).

Hodge won her second event of the day, claiming first place in the 500-yard freestyle by nearly seven seconds (5:15.55).

In the 100-yard breaststroke, senior Jacquee Clabeaux placed first (1:04.00) with freshman Daphne Bernal in second (1:08.72).  Clabeaux also recorded a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.96).

Mason claimed the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly, with sophomore Abigail Murtaugh touching the wall first (2:07.65), senior Annie McNenny second (2:10.77) and freshman Michaela Teachey third (2:12.17).

Murtaugh registered the top time in the 100-yard butterfly (58.41), with McNenny second (59.41) in the event.

Tyler, Clabeaux, Murtaugh and Judge won the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.68).

Freshman Emma McDonald won both the one-meter (200.70) and the three-meter (205.05) diving events.

On the men’s side, the Patriots won 11 events on the day.

Mason took the top three spots in the 1650-yard freestyle, with junior Jackson Knouse first (16:20.41), freshman Zachary Kopel second (16:35.81) and sophomore Graham Boyle third (16:39.53).

Knouse picked up his second win of the afternoon with the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.12).

Sophomore Anthony Nguyen won the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.18), with Knouse third in the event (1:47.34).

Freshman Alexander Franklin took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke (50.62), while sophomore Dylan Nguyen placed third (52.13).  Franklin also won the 100-yard butterfly (49.90).

Junior Thomas Chapman won both the 100-yard breaststroke (58.29) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.90).

Senior Jared Bergan swam to a win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.20).

Senior Will Rastatter, freshman Zane Roberts, sophomore Sorab Aman and Franklin combined to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.84).

Sophomore Ian Castegnaro won both the one-meter (265.05) and three-meter (249.75) diving events.

The Patriots are back in action at the Atlantic 10 Championships Feb. 16-19 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

FAIRFAX, Va. – Old Dominion University men’s and women’s swimming fell at George Mason in its final regular meet of the regular season. The women lost to Mason 173-102, while the men had a 175.5-113.5 setback.

The Monarch meet will next compete in the CCSA Championships from Feb. 16-19, while the women’s squad will compete in the Conference USA Championships from Feb. 23-26.

“It was a tough loss today for the Monarchs, but there were a lot of great swims from both teams. We saw really great racing and effort from everyone,” ODU head coach Jess Livsey said. “We have been practicing really well and will continue to keep our eyes on our goals as we head into the final phase of our season. The coaching staff can’t wait to see what we can do at conferences.”

In the opening event of the meet, the Old Dominion women placed third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.47. Summer Sampson swam the lead, followed by Marian CheramyMartina Ciriesi and Tara Enneking.

The ODU men placed second in the 200 medley relay, as Jacob CobbPeter DurisinLiam Redman and Noah Wilkins finished with a time of 1:34.48.

Brynn Jewell started ODU on a strong note in individual events, winning the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:59.68. Miranda Byrne placed third in 18:21.82.

In the 200 women’s freestyle, Summer Miln took third with a time of 1:56.16.

Ryan Lincicum placed second for ODU in the men’s 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.65.

Tara Enneking earned another third-place spot for the women’s squad, finishing with a time of 57.83 in the 100 backstroke. Enneking added a second-place swim in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.86. Kristina Zachary placed third with a time of 2:27.59. Enneking won the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.49, while Ciriesi came in second in 2:13.89 and Sampson third in 2:17.16.

Noah Wilkins took second for the men in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.16.

In the 100 breaststroke, Ciriesi added a third for the women’s squad with a time of 1:08.80.

The men’s 100 breaststroke was a barnburner, as Peter Durisin finished in second, just .21 behind Thomas Chapman of George Mason. Durisin added a third-place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.51.

Zander Johnson placed second in the men’s 200 butterfly with a time of 1:58.65.

In the 50 freestyle, Summer Miln took third with a time of 24.54. Miln also placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.17.
