WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2022-23 season on Friday at the Potomac Relay Invitational, hosted by American University.

Facing teams from American, Georgetown, Howard and Mount St. Mary’s, both the Mason women’s and men’s teams placed first in the event.

The Mason women’s team won five events and finished with 554 points, followed by Georgetown (502), American (398), Howard (366) and Mount St. Mary’s (356).

On the men’s side, the Patriots took the top spot in four events and finished with 532 points, followed by Howard (466), Georgetown (460), American (418) and Mount St. Mary’s (402).

On the women’s side, the team of graduate student Jacquee Clabeaux, senior Leah Riley, and sophomores Ali Tyler and Shannon Judge won the 200-yard medley relay (143.59).

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the combination of graduate student Madison Nalls, sophomores Emma DeJong and Anka Whelan, and freshman Angelina Zeidan touched the wall first (7:46.84).

In the 3X100 backstroke relay, the team of Tyler, Whelan and Judge took the top spot by over six seconds (2:50.44).

Clabeaux, Tyler, Whelan and DeJong won the 400-yard medley relay by nearly seven seconds (3:57.12).

Freshman Peyton Brehmer, Tyler, Judge and Clabeaux claimed the 200-yard freestyle relay by nearly four seconds (1:35.08).

The Patriots also placed second in the 3×100 butterfly relay, 3×100 breaststroke relay, 500-yard freestyle relay and 1000-yard freestyle relay.

On the men’s side, the combination of freshmen Danny SchwabauerTate Anderson and Joshua Hochard, along with sophomore Zachary Kopel touched the wall first in the 800-freestyle relay.

In the 3X100 backstroke relay, the team of sophomore Alexander Franklin, junior Jackson Brookover and Anderson swam to a first-place finish (2:34.40).

Senior Josh Fletcher, sophomore Zane Roberts, Schwabauer and Anderson won the 500-yard freestyle relay by nearly four seconds (4:07.90).

In the 1000-yard freestyle relay, Kopel and Anderson combined to take the top spot by nearly seven seconds (9:31.67)

The Patriots also placed second in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and 3X100 butterfly relay.

The Patriots are back in action when they host Towson on Saturday, Oct. 8 with the dual meet scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va.
