George Mason Sweeps Dual Against Towson

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams swept Towson in the first dual meet of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va.

The Mason women’s team won 10 of 16 events to defeat Towson, 145-133.  The Patriots’ men’s team placed first in nine of 16 events on the way to a 159-139 victory over the Tigers.

On the women’s side, the team of graduate student Jacquee Clabeaux, senior Leah Riley, and sophomores Ali Tyler and Shannon Judge won the 200-yard medley relay to start the meet (1:43.50).

The Patriots claimed the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle, with Tyler taking first (51.29) and sophomore Emma DeJong right behind in second (52.90).  Tyler also sprinted to a win in the 50-yard freestyle (23.24).

Mason took the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with Clabeaux first (1:04.44) and freshman Ainsley Toews second (1:06.69).

Junior Abigail Murtaugh won the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.74), while Riley placed third in the event (2:09.76).  Murtaugh was second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.05) and Riley recorded a third-place finish (57.13).

The Patriots went one-two in the 200-yard freestyle with graduate student Madison Nalls touching the wall first (1:52.61) and DeJong second (1:54.82).  Nalls also swam to a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.57), while freshman Anna Beth Blankenship placed third in the event (5:15.77).

In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Anka Whelan took the top spot (56.53) and Judge placed third in the event (59.11).  Whelan also won the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.71), while Judge placed second (2:07.44).

The Patriots took the top three spots in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Clabeaux first (2:20.38), sophomore Daphne Bernal second (2:24.43) and freshman Brooke Nelson third (2:25.84).

Sophomore Sydney Branch placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:54.81), with classmate Hope Jaynes fifth in the event (11:41.49).

In the diving events, sophomore Emma McDonald placed second in the one-meter (213.45 pts.) and third in the three-meter (212.70).

On the men’s side, freshman Tate Anderson won the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.87).  Anderson also took the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.16) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.17).

The Patriots took all three spots on the podium in the 100-yard backstroke, with sophomore Alexander Franklin first (50.58), freshman Jett Lee second (51.66) and freshman Niko Natsvlishvili third (52.14).

In the 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Tyler Lentine touched the wall first (56.59), while senior Sammy Lucht placed third (57.95).  Lentine also posted a win in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.29), with senior Thomas Chapman third (2:09.60).

The Patriots went one-two in the 50-yard freestyle with sophomore Zane Roberts first (20.88) and senior Josh Fletcher second (21.26).

Freshman Aoun Al-Hiari won the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.50).

Sophomore Zachary Kopel placed second in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.62) and 100-yard freestyle (9:49.73).

The combination of Alexander Franklin, Lucht, Fletcher and Roberts took second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.68). The team of junior Jackson Brookover, sophomore Joshua HochardJett Lee and Lentine placed third in the event (1:33.18).

In the diving events, junior Indigo Flynch won the three-meter (247.50 pts. and placed fourth in the one-meter (217.13).  Junior Ian Castegnaro placed second in both the one-meter (249.60 pts.) and three-meter (245.63).

The Patriots are back in action at the Richmond Duals Oct. 21-22 in Richmond, Va.

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women’s swimming and diving team dropped the first dual meet of the season to George Mason 145-133 Saturday afternoon.

The men’s team fell 159-139 to the Patriots in Fairfax.

How it Happened

On the women’s side:

  • Bridget Thomas took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.17.
  • Hailey Ritter placed first in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 56.63.
  • Shannon Parrau swept the diving events for the Tigers, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 228.80 and 226.50, respectively.

For the men:

  • Blakely Dean took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 9:45.98.
  • Michael Fazio clocked in at 46.21 to win the 100-yard freestyle.
  • Brian Benzing’s 48.86 in the 100-yard butterfly won the event for the Tigers.
  • Patrick Flint’s time of 1:54.47 was enough for first in the 200-yard IM.
  • Ajani Dorner took first in 1-meter dive with a score of 251.50.
  • The men’s team also won two relays on the afternoon: the 200-yard medley comprised of Evan BotaNoah Diacumakos, Benzing and Fazio and the 400-yard freestyle relay, made up of Daniel McLaughlin, Fazio, Diacumakos and Benzing. They clocked in at 1:31.34 and 3:01.30, respectively.

“While we fell short on the score today, we did have several individual and team highlights that will position us well for later in the season,” head coach Anthony Bruno said. “I am proud of the way our group competed all the way to the end of the meet. It was great to see our first-year divers step up and we saw a lot of season-best times for many of our team members for this early in the season. I am looking forward to our next meet with William and Mary in 14 days.”

Both the men’s and women’s programs will return to Burdick Pool on Saturday, Oct. 22 to face off with William & Mary to open their CAA conference slate.
