George Washington Adds UIL State Finalist Daniel Choi for 2023

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

A multiple-time finalist at the UIL (Texas high school) 6A Swimming and Diving State Championships, Daniel Choi of Cypress, Texas has announced his decision to move to the east coast this fall, committing to swim at George Washington University.

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic journey at George Washington University! I want to thank God, my family, coaches, friends, and everyone else who supported me to take this monumental step in my life. #raisehigh #4coachlouis
Choi is currently finishing his senior year of high school at Cypress Woods, which he represented last month at the high school state championships. Choi was an A-finalist at the meet, finishing in 6th in the 500 free in a time of 4:30.67. He also led off his school’s 400 free relay with a time of 47.59.
Last summer, while swimming for his club team, Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club, Choi was a multiple-event finalist at the Futures meet in College Station. His highest finish came in the 800 free, where he took 7th with a time of 8:33.79. He also added top-16 finishes in the 400 free (4:06.31) and 1500 free (16:36.37).

Top SCY Times

  • 500 free – 4:29.31
  • 1650 free – 15:38.68
  • 200 IM – 1:52.46
  • 400 IM – 3:56.35

The men’s team at George Washington is fresh off a season that saw them win their third straight Atlantic-10 conference title. The team was coached by Brian Thomas, who was named the A-10 Coach of the year for his efforts.

With Choi’s lifetime bests in the distance events, he will fit right in among the program’s best when he arrives on campus this fall. Last season, his best time in the 500 free would have ranked him as the team’s 7th best performer. It would have also been good enough to make the A-final of the event at the 2023 A-10 Championships. George Washington has five swimmers in that final.

Choi’s best time in the mile would have also scored within the top-8 at the 2023 A-10 Championships.

When he arrives on campus, Choi will have two years of overlap with one of the fastest distance swimmers in conference history, Philip Moldovanu. Moldonavu finished second in the 1650 this season, but was under the previous conference record in the event. He also took third in the 500 free.
