Georgia 6A State Champ Maddy Cohen Commits To Florida State

m-cohen-2

Georgia state champion Maddy Cohen will be staying down south next season, as she’s verbally committed to join the Florida State Seminoles. Cohen is primarily a sprint free/backstroker, and will travel to Tallahassee from her club training base with Swim Atlanta.

I chose FSU because of the instant connection with the team, the coaches, and the superb facilities. Everyone made me feel like part of the family. The coaching staff here is building something special, and I’m blessed to be a part of it. I look forward to succeeding both in the pool, and in the classroom! Go Noles!

At the 2016 Georgia 6A High School State Championships, Cohen was a 2-time finalist. There, she clocked a personal best 50.23 to win the 100 freestyle. That gave her back-to-back state titles, as she was also the 100 free champ at the 2015 6A state meet.

Cohen also picked up a silver medal with her 55.30 in the 100 back at state, but she wound up going even faster than that later in the season at Speedo Winter Junior Nationals (East). At Juniors, she landed a 17th place finish after lowering her time to a 54.46.

Cohen’s Top Times:

Event Best time
50 free 23.47
100 free 50.23
100 back 54.46
200 back 2:01.93

Cohen could potentially have an immediate scoring impact for the Noles at the ACC Championships. Last season, her time in the 100 back would’ve landed her within hundredths of scoring range. She also would’ve been within 2 tenths of what it took to score in the 100 free.

When she arrives at FSU, Cohen will be a member of Head Coach Neal Studd‘s first recruiting class. Since he arrived earlier this fall, Studd has added several members to the incoming group. The following women have also verbally committed to Florida State’s class of 2021:
