The Georgia Bulldogs Top the Kentucky Wildcats in the “Double Distance” Season Opener

Georgia and Kentucky faced off today to open both of their seasons. This marks the first meet for Lars Jorgensen as Kentucky’s Head Coach. Jorgensen took over the program from Gary Conelly, who was the head coach of the program for 22 years.

The Georgia teams were the favorites leading into the meet, the women are the defending national champions, and the men finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats faced off in Athens, Georgia and competed with a “double distance format.” Some of the events included the 150, 300 and 2,000 freestyles, the 300 individual medley, and the 150 and 300 backstrokes, breaststrokes, and butterfles.

The Geogria Bulldogs got the best of the Kentucky Wildcats today, winning every event. The Georgia men won with a score of 162-110 and the women won with a score of 165-98.

Matias Koski and Chase Kalisz were both triple event winners for the bulldogs. Koski won the 100, 150, and 300 freestyle events and Kalisz won the 300 butterflyfly, 300 breaststroke, and 300 IM, although his IM was an exhibition swim.

Kentucky’s scored very well in the diving events. Greg Ferrucci and John Fox finished first and second for the wildcats in the 1 meter and 3 meter events. Christa Cabot snagged a first place finish on the 1 meter and finished second during the 3 meter diving.

UK returns home to host Ohio State on Oct. 11 in the Lancaster Aquatics Center. The OSU men finished 12th in the country last season, while the women claimed a 28th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

UGA will return to action against Wisconsin on Oct. 4-5 in Gabrielsen Natatorium. The Wisconsin men finished 13th at the NCAA Championships and the Women finished in 15th.
