Georgia Davies Lowers Her Own British Record w/ 27.49 50 Back in Semis

2017 FINA WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

26-year-old British swimming veteran Georgia Davies took down her own 3-year-old British record tonight in the 50 back semifinals in Budapest, swimming 27.49.

Davies qualified fourth with a time .07 faster than her previous record, a 27.56 from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 50 back is her particular specialty, though she has qualified for the last two Olympics in the 100 back, missing semifinals both times.

Davies is swimming at the top of her game this year. She put up a 59.34 personal best in the 100 back at British Trials in April.

Tomorrow, Davies will take on two of the fastest 50 backstrokers in history at the top of their game. 2nd-fastest swimmer all-time and defending champion Fu Yuanhui put up a 27.19 for the fourth-fastest swim in history to qualify second, while Brazilian defending silver medalist Etiene Medeiros swam 27.18 to qualify first, break her South American record, and tie Fu for the third-fastest swim in history. Kathleen Baker set an American record with 27.48 to qualify third.
